The coffee cup honer.

I just sat down with a cup of coffee when I saw this thread.
Didn't even look at the posters name in my haste.
Not only very interesting and informative but a Jackknife story too.
Now I assume you mean the unglazed ring on the bottom of the cup?

I have sharpened knives on the unglazed section of a cup in the kitchen, but never in the coffee shop.
 
I must not know how to do it correctly. I was given a ceramic electrical fitting of some sort but an old guy at church (this was about 20 years ago). He said to keep it handy to hone my blade with.

I get better results with a stone though. Maybe we need to have Carl organize "adult scout day" and everyone meet at his house, or the back room of the local Denny's, for knife care demonstrations, lessons, tutorials.
