The Collected Works of Bill Martino – A work in progress

Hi Howard:

Just checked and our logo khukuri is a Salyan (even says "Salay" in the engraving on blade that can barely be seen. Probably should move this out of the Dhankuta style.

Uncle Bill

Howard, Gurkha is not spelled correctly. Pala thinks we should call it Gorkha which is the way it is properly spelled and the way they spell it in Nepal and India. I'm not sure. If the Queen of England spells it Gurkha who am I to argue. She's their boss!

Everything else looks pretty accuarate and it is a very nice job on your part. I didn't realize what a blabber mouth I was. Once I make the post I pretty much forget about it.

Now that shop 2 has learned how to make the power equipment do what they want it to do they are destroying some of those old production figures I quoted. A sign of the times!

Uncle Bill

Bill, Is that you? I didn't recognise you in drag. Say, do you come here often...

Just kidding. I'll fix up the things you mentioned.

Many thanks Howard. You have done an excellent job.

You asked about the pix under the Dhankuta style Khukuris.Someone please correct me if I am wrng, but I think the little brass colored handle one with the different shaped cho is a Salyan model Khukuri.

If I have ever happened to write anything you would like to use Howard, then please consider this as permission to use it.I would be honored to be a part of anything like this with the forum here and H.I.

Thanks again for a job wonderfully and thoughtfully done.

I am having trouble posting too.

Now y'all have me wondering if I can post. If you can read this I guess I can.

"Oh, a magic khukuri. Why didn't you say so?"

The parts diagram is now in the "construction and maintenance" section of the FAQ. We never did name all of those parts, so I named them. I don’t know how long we’ll want to call that pointy thing on the end of the knife “Fred,” so please mention any superior terms to the one’s I’ve used.

Also, what do you all think of user reviews linked to each style? Would any of you be willing to provide reviews of your favorites? What about off-FAQ links to Cliff's reviews?

Howard,

I'm glad you are making the the FAQ. It is hard to believe how much information is in the Himalayan Imports forum.

Perhaps we should get Kami Shepa to fill in some of the symbolic details in the construction of the khukuri. For example what are the handle rings symbolic of?

Will

Will,

Good idea on getting the information from Kami Sherpa.

By the way, can I put your review of your 20" Sirupati in the FAQ?

Howard, Pala thinks the rings and little ridge once had a definite meaning of some kind -- almost certainly to do with religion -- but he says today nobody really knows what the meaning is or was. He points out that the configuration is fairly rigid. A pair of rings down maybe 1/4 of the handle length from the bolster -- small space and another pair of rings -- then the ridge with a single ring in it -- a final ring just below the ridge.

Personally, I find it very interesting that almost all good kamis use the same configuration but none of them know why they put it on the handle or what it might mean.

Outstanding job Howard! If you wish to use any of my posts (although I can't imagine why you would) pease feel free. I think links to Cliff's reviews is an excellant idea. I may be the only one with this "problem", and if so just disregard this suggestion, but many of the pictures get cut off at the bottom of the page when printing each section out. You may want to think about shifting some things a bit to prevent this for those who wish to print your FAQ. There may be a way to prevent this but I am too computer illiterate to know how to do it
Anyway, great job, thanks!

Mike

Suggested additions by Yvsa are now in the construction and safety sections.

Material on rings added to construction section.

I am a novice with HTML, and am using the (somewhat primitive) Netscape composer. I do not see a way to put in page breaks or influence printing. I could put the pages together one screen at a time, but this would be pretty tedious, and it would have to be redone each time some material was added. Do any of you have hints for more effective ways to deal with the printing problem?

The FAQ is a wonderful idea. but editing can be done any time.

On the other hand, as long as nobody has the old KF archives copied, they can be wiped, lost to us at any time. So that is my major and first concern which does me no good since I dont know how to copy onto even the 1.44MB floppies.

Mike,et al:
I have two options on my printing.I don't know about real computers.
If I punch the print button it will print _everything_ on the page.If I punch print screen thenit will dojust that.I have gotten fairly adept at juggling the pic around.I can only do it up and down.I have the keyboard which of course moves the pic and text and I also have a remote for viewing or surfing. This lets me get a pic centered very well 99 % of the time.
When I punch "print" then it may come up as printing 1 of 5.When it does that a pic may be on two pages.

I also have found that if I C & P a web page into my mail and then send it to myself I can print i off with normall sized print. If I print one of the pages here it comes out in very bold large print.About a size 7 font I would guess.
I don't know if that will help you Mike, but it may be worth a try.

Howard I just have to tell you again
how nice the FAQ's you are setting up are.It is a beautiful job.

I don't know if there are any Chainpuri pix in the archieves here or in the old Knifeforum, but if there is could you use it in the FAQ page it should go on?

Namaste Everyone,

Just a thought: If the FAQ gets big enough to be published as a book, I would suggest that the proceeds be used to purchase safety equipment for the kamis, eg. safety goggles, welder's glasses, etc., so that we do not see kamis having to retire from khukuri making prematurely due to blindness or other occupational hazards.

What say you?

Harry

Yvsa – I’ve been looking for a Chainpuri picture, but I can’t find one. Can anyone point (give a URL) me to one?

In general, when anyone has a suggestion, it will be most helpful if you will supply a URL pointing to the particular post or picture.

I added a section on Carry Options.

Ghost – I took the liberty of recording and attributing your observation that a pistol belt works well for carry. If you would like the attribution removed please let me know.

Bill – With my karma, I can use all the points I can get!

Kozak – You are very considerate. I added a little to the safety section about the unique approach to safety at shop 2.
