That is a sweet collection. I understand about the wife. Mine asked me what that long box was and I just told here it was another knife.

Sweet! I am curious on your buying rules. How price strict are you? Or you just buy what you like because it's not all that expensive anyway? I try to be strict in sticking to my price range. buy online or run through the antique malls etc? all of mine have been in person.

Hahahahahahahaha, seek help right away ;-))))
Great collection, but you'll need to buy it a house of it's own if you keep going.

Best regards

Robin

Many of these I have removed the handle and redone them. Polished up the heads, and now they look pretty good.

I was wondering, for anyone that also collects axes, hatchets, etc. Do you work on the handles at all or leave them be? I have a new purchase, an old single bit axe from a railroad. It is all rusted and the handle is old. I can shine the head up no problem, but sometimes I wonder if I should redo the handles, or leave em be. I guess it just all depends. Wonder what other people thought on the matter. Some old timers have told me to not touch the handles. Others have told me have at it.

The way I look at it, if I was that old and a piece of history, I would want to look as good as possible. Little tlc couldnt hurt. Some of the old ones though(handles) I leave alone, because they look good, are in good condition, etc. Just wondering what others thought.

Thanks.

Nice collection bro. Have the same problem from the wife. I even purposely order my books and other junk from amazon to throw the wife off now and then... but it sure is hard when some big hunk of steel comes in the mail. Doesnt exactly look like a book. Same as i tell my wife who HATES my hobbies- My vices have been-and could be-a hell of a lot worse then heavily collecting: guns, knives and axes.

My wife says i have a problem, but you to her, would be a sick, sick man

I have removed handles and made them fit better or a previous owner did a crappy job of setting the wedges, which can be a pain to get out. I have also made small pieces to fit down in the eye if there is small void and they hold up good, just set them with some glue, but don't go crazy all over in the eye, You may want to use good judgement, don't want to build a widow maker.

I haven't done this yet, but I am going to take some deer footed handles that have part of the "foot" split off, take a block plane flatten up where the piece is missing, glue on and maybe put a small peg or two in it then after the glue sets take a rasp, belt sander, spoke shave, and sandpaper to shape it down and smooth it up.

Some of these old handles don't look the best but I think they can be spruced up.

I have gotten so into collecting this old stuff and appreciating the superior quality, I found myself checking out old ladies at the coffee shop, wondering if they are better the new ones too.

I have several that I have picked up and redone. Normally if the handle is in good shape and tight I leave it on and just re oil it. The head I put a plastic bag over it and soak it in mustard for a day or so. Then hit it with a wire wheel.
You have a very nice collection going there.........:)

that is awesome, though i feel your sickness may be contagious, i feel draw to a single bit i have been looking at for awhile now. question, in the last picture there is a beautifal double bit in the middle, with the raised contours on it, who made it?

That one with the bevels would be a Kelly Dynamic. One of my first double bit pick ups at a flea market for 10 bucks. Totally rusted when I got it, all I could see was DY on it. The handle was pretty much shot also. But it is the original head and handle. I fixed her up, and there she is, waiting to be used again.

Nice collection. Some handles I remove others I dont. If the handle is original on an old axe thats going into the collection I usually leave it. I bought an old Mann True American axe that I had planned on using but when it arrived it had the original handle so I left it and it went into the collection. :D

In your first photo is there a brand name on that swamping pattern axe head? How wide is it? I really like swamping patterns.

Nice collection. Do you have any Gransfors bruks hatchets? I have recently inherited a medium size collection (~25). I will be posting them for sale once I upgrade to a gold membership (just upgraded).

I am in the same boat. Some handles I will re do. Some, I wont. I got an old single bit with a hardware logo on it, and the handle is old....hardware company went out of business in 1876....and the handle is almost in a petrified state, so I left it alone. Looks pretty neat. Others ones I will clean em up and go from there.

I dont have any of those. I dont have anything not from USA or Canada. I havent gotten into other countries........yet. Thats a whole new realm now......oh boy!
