Well guys I own a few Emerson's (7) and I don't own a commander. I love my CQC-7, it's been my constant companion for forever now with the super 7 being my favorite variation. I feel like the 7,8, and commander are the signature Emerson's and I've decided I need to get a commander. I want a Commander that's about the same size as the Super 7 or regular 8. According to what I've read online the regular commander is about this size, if anyone could post pics of the regular commander, or super commander next to an 8, 7, or a roadhouse it'd be much appreciated. My biggest worry is sharpening. I hand sharpen all my knives on my King synthetic whetstone, and I get great results but the recurve worries me. I know sharpening it won't be the 2 minute fix that sharpening one of my 7s is, but will I be able to get it sharp on such a stone? If anyone would like to post testimonials for or against the Commander or post pics I'd be much appreciated.

I'd also like to add that I'm trading several of my Emerson duplicates on the trade forum, if one of you regular posters here in the Emerson forum were to make me an offer I'd weigh more favorable on your offers than others (no I will not trade you my knives for plastic cafeteria knives!).

I can't weigh in on the regular commander, so feel free to disregard. However, I carry my CQC7 on a regular basis and find out of my humble bit of Emerson collection the mini commander is my second go to. Very awesome knife and as all Emerson's tend to do, it melts into my hand like it was made for it.

I also free hand sharpen and feel when the time comes the recurve won't be a major headache ( hopefully).

I have 3 Commanders now and a forth on the way. One is a 2013 Jungle. andother 2013 with standoffs and a mint in box 2000.

The Commander is my favorite knife that Emerson makes and I have most all of his styles. I have the mini Commander (2007) also and it is cool. But prefer the Horseman in that size category. The CQC-15 is similar to the mini Commander.

But getting back to the regular Commander. It is my favorite Emerson. Mr. Emerson carrys one himself .

It waves out of the pocket and has the best ergos IMO. I also like the pointed grips for self defense.

I think it is the most beautiful blade and the most baddass looking Emerson design.

Heck I want to but more and am looking for a stain blade Commander on the exchange everyday. I want to send the next one off to Nath for a full custom job.

Thanks guys. I saw your pic Indiana guy, and colubrid thanks for the info. How does a regular Commander compare in size to say a roadhouse? On paper they appear to be almost the same size. I'm worried that a regular commander might be to small, like the regular 7 is for me. I need something the size of a roadhouse at minimum, and I'm wondering if the super commander may be what I'm looking for.

The super is not that much bigger in the blade length to make hardly a difference. The handles sure are huge though.

The regular commander is a big knife. You can check exact blade lengths on the Emerson site and you will see the Commander is a long and heftier blade compared to others. If that is what you are looking for!

The emerson sites all screwy. It says the jungle commander is 3.5, but the same sized commander is labled as being 4 inches and the super is listed as being 3.75

Specifics?

Conflicted.. Looking to accompany the mini CQC7 with a commander but even the mini has a 'significantly larger' blade. Micro is a bit too small, but since I'm looking at 3.3+ then the doors open.. mini CQC15 right there with the handle size, too. The more I look at the black, serrated mini commander though.. :D

Glad you like it! Now that you have a Commander, what do you think of the size? Is it large enough?

I like the Commander alot, it's my favorite blade shape. If I could change one or two things it would be a frame lock and a reinforced blade tip. That would be my only two suggestions.

Ditto on the framelock, Ron. I really like my Super Commander blade but I agree with you that I'd change the lock.

What he said. Dude just get custom and you'll be much happier.

The regular size is alright, it fits my hand pretty well. I do feel like a super would be better. Its close to the regular cqc-8 in size, but just not as perfect in my hand as the regular 8 grip is. If I'm not mistaken wasn't the super commander the original size Emerson was trying to get issued to the military?
