The Companies We Should Support

i have to agree with cutter17. It all depends on what a company wants. if the goal is a knife that costs $2 per unit they'll do it, but obviouslly there are going to be quality problems, if the goal is a quality product they can do that too. The best example i have seen is shoes, you can go to the night market and pick up a pair of shoes for the equvilent of $5 they are crap and uncomfortable as heck or i can go into a department store and pay the equvialent of $60 and find a great pair of hand made leather shoes that are awsome quality and comfort. It always about what you are willing to pay for.

effer, you are right on, IMO. Capitalism is as American as apple pie. The theory doesn't end at our borders. Competition is good for everyone; it promotes progress. One only needs to look to North Korea to validate your statement about a closed economy.

pointless semantics here.

i think we all get that the countries/land/entities known as the U.S.A. and China don't actually make anything, it is people who populate those areas that make the products.

can we just assume for the purposes of this thread that a chinese product is chinese, and an american product is american?

Actually, it's very poignant semantics. To say that China cannot make a decent product is to say that China is, for some reason, incapable because it is China, or Chinese. This is unsupportable, and verges on bigotry or even racism.

China based factories make exactly what their customers want. Nothing more, nothing less. This is exactly the same with US companies. When they are inferior, it is not because they are Chinese (or American), but because their customers do not demand anything more.

However, by definition and given it is communist, isn't anything made in China actually made by the Chinese government, therefore it is made by China?

If this was the 1960's through the early 1980's you would be correct. However many (maybe most) things especially production has been privatized and are made by individual companies. certain things like transportation some, communication, and other things are still owned at the top by the government for "security reasons" but they also contract work out to private companies. the government is finding that if private companies are competing the government gets a better price, they are learning :D

Effer has it right. There are no companies that we "should" support. Companies need to survive on their own merit, and not on the welfare of others.

i stated as much previously.

but saying the state of ohio doesn't actually make anything means nothing. if a blade is stamped "made in ohio", we know exactly what that means.

I think buying and supporting manufacturer's products just because you live in the same country and trying to support it's economy is a bit of a wrong thinking. If one manufacturer offers products that are less value than some other, why should you choose them? As a matter of fact by choosing those inferior products you don't really support progress of your economy. If you read some economics books, you will see that there have been some extreme cases of closed markets where government thought that by making their people buy domestic products they will help the economy. That didn't really work, and those decisions backfired. There was no progress, products couldn't compete, no export, buyers spent more than what they should have and had less money for other things, overall lover quality of life. Competition is good, either it is domestic or global. You, as a consumer, have power to choose a product that gives you a better value. Value for you can be in design, materials, build quality, warranty, etc. USA companies produce very high quality knives made from best materials and with great designs. People from all over the world buy USA knives because they are in most cases the best. Support should go to those who can do better than most. It is natural. Look at Benchmade, Spyderco, Sebenza, Strider, Hinderer to name a few. If CRKT would make knives from the same materials as Benchmade, with the same or better build quality and with designs that attract more people, at half the price, then Benchmade should evolve and offer something better.

Same goes for mentioned car manufacturer's, clothes, food, etc. Support those who do the best, the rest should learn and catch up.

As far as diesels I know Mercedes makes some excellent diesels, but I really like a 2500 Dodge with a Cummins under the hood.

Yep.. I've had my 02 Dodge 2500 x-cab 4x4 with the Cummins since Aug 02.
Unfortunately it was assembled in Mexico. However, there has been absolutely no quality isssues with this truck. I use my truck and it has spent a lot of time in the woods and desert and still has absolutely no rattles or leaks...

It will definetely haul a couple Elk :D Or anything else I can stuff in to the bed or hook up to the hitch.

While we are criticizing things, couldn't give me a Ford with a Powerstroke..

Well yeah you cant have good quality control when you have kids that are 8 years old making the majority of the products.

As far as racism just shut up, I am not being racists, I am stating a fact, that quality control is not near where ours is and they dont care about most of their products but are just making them as cheap as possible.

They make them cheaply because consumers want the stuff.
Age has nothing to do with quality.. I know a lot of adults that could care less about how well they do a job..
I've been a Teamsters Union member for almost 30 years and I can tell you for fact, I have worked with some of the most non productive, lazy people there are...

Almost forgot, Kudos to Buck this year for bring back a lot of their products to the U.S...

I just read a piece the other day about the private sector in China, that is why I stated that I'm not going to pretend about understanding how their economy functions. Let's hope they continue to learn.

kind of begs an interesting questions.

dodge is an american company.

your truck was assembled in mexico, presumably with parts from other countries as well.

is it then a mexican truck? is it the sum of its parts?

or is it still american because dodge is an american company?

Some of the parts are made in Mexico, but Dodges are assembled and mostly made in the US and I believe Cummins is 100% US.

Fords not bad but not my favorite.

I know a guy who towed 31,000 with a 2006 2500 Cummins Diesel and he said he was overheating coming up Lost Trail Pass.

China must have quite a pool of 8 year olds if they are making a majority of the products.

Those are some remarkable facts there. Do you have any evidence to support them? I ask because they sure sound made up.

You know what I am talking about, young people forced to work 12-14 hour days. Hold on this word might ring a bell, Sweatshops ever heard of them?

Well I am done with this thread.

I keep telling myself its an American made truck, but every time I see the sticker in the door really makes me wonder.... :(

I ordered a new 1 ton Ford 4x4 in 1990 and was really surprised that it had a sticker in the windshield, assembled in Canada.

Even with all the anti American things these big companies did in the past, they sure don't have a problem accepting bailout money from the same taxpayers that they have been throwing to the curb for the last 20 years or so...

I have to disagree. Made in Ohio means made in Ohio, but that does not mean "made like Busse" Some people are looking at something like Fenix or Nitecore, and thinking "made like the Chinese flashlights at Wal-mart" Too many people expect the exact same level of production quality from everything marked China, yet who would do that with things marked Ohio?

I mean, just look at this

I know some people who wont spend over $10.00 for a knife, and you know what you are going to get for that. And someone has to make knives for people like that.

+1 for Buck.

In order to be qualified as a American made vehicle it has to be more than half made in the US.

GM is kind of disappointing, they should have gotten their act together 20 years ago.
