The Coper legacy.

Our son John has been doing that for years now. He won't carry a wallet because its too bulky. Just his credit card, drivers license, and a few other things with a big rubber band.

The wallet in my LFP is kind of bulky as well. And it really only contains some bills, my debit card, driver’s license (which is also my ID) and public transport card. So 3 cards and some paper really. I think I’m going to give this rubber band thing a try tomorrow! Minimalism is a good thing! I’ll update.

I'm not as far along as you guys, but I'm getting there. I had my daughter and her boyfriend (who just graduated from a firefighting academy) over, dumped most of my knives on the floor, and told them to take as many as they could. That helped, but I still have a ways to go.

It’s a good thing to let go of ‘stuff’ in general. Outside of the items I obviously need for living like kitchen utensils and clothes etc, everything else has gradually been sold or given away. All I kept was the stuff that I really use the stuff that has emotional value. It was hard at first, but once it’s gone, you don’t miss it. At least that is my experience.

I have long been minimalistic in my desires, but fluctuate up and down as I purge and then slowly acquire things again over time. At the end of 2022 I took stock and decided it’s overall too much. My goal in 2023 is to cut my belongings in half. I already started but will have to pick up the pace.

My pocket Contents rarely vary. A knife, small AAA flashlight, wallet, phone, chapstick, pen. I do still like to vary the knife depending on my day, but I really only carry 5 different ones through the year, my small tinker being frequent. I’ll be parting with anything I didn’t carry in 2022 and acquiring no others.

While I like my peanut, I don’t think I’m ready to go to a classic. Perhaps with more years will come more wisdom.

Based, if I recall correctly, on jackknife Carl's evangelism here on BladeForums, I bought a Fenix E01 v2.0 about a year ago. It's a GREAT piece of gear that ticks all the right boxes for me: It's simple and rugged, has long battery life, it's small, and it's more than bright enough for walking the dog or using around the campsite.

If you're not carrying a flashlight or haven't looked recently at what's available, do yourself a favor and get one. Flashlight technology has REALLY improved. Whether Fenix or some other brand, it's amazing how much light you can have on hand in a tiny package for $20 or less!

To get back to SAKs ....... I DEFINITELY appreciate the Classic, but my Rambler is the one that gets carried. If I ever lose it, I'll buy another Rambler the same day. I guess I'm a ramblin' guy. 🤠

Yeah, I didn't think I was gonna like the E01v2.0. but I was convinced my old E01 was gone. I order the new one, and to my great surprise, I really liked the E01v2.0. I liked that it always came on the lowest setting first, and that was good for 95% of my uses. If I wanted more power, it was there, but I didn't have to use it much at all. Kind of like having an emergency warp capability if needed. The high setting is really surprisingly bright, and lights up the backyard to the shop building. But run time on high is less than an hour. I think the run time on low is like 22 hours or something insane like that. Of course, a week after the new light arrived, I found my old E01 under the seat of the car where it had dropped. Its now a stand by in the sock drawer.

The rambler must be a great carry, our son Matt, loves his and carries it everywhere. Last time we talked, he was starting to sell off his knife accumulation, and I asked him when he's gonna dump the SAK's. He said when hell freezes over.

Edit to add; The reason I fell in love with Fenix, my little e01 had a rough life, camping, kayaking/canoe camping, motorcycle touring and camping, emergency use in power blackouts. It got used in a tropical storm in Key West, a winter freeze and blackout here in Texas. For ten years it got beat up on my keyring banging against keys, Leatherman squirt, got dropped some here and there. But never, I mean never, did it ever fail. No shaking it to get it going, no blinking because something came loose inside. It got used, beat up, yet always, ALWAYS, WORKED. It came through is emergencies and non emergencies.

Fenix lights are reliable, and I worship at the shrine of reliability. Thats why I only carry revolvers, and drive Toyota's, and carry Victorinox SAK's over any other kind of pocket knife. Except for my little Leatherman squirt, which has proven to be not as reliable, but with factory service that is unreal. When the notorious scissor spring broke, I sent it off, and in two weeks had a new squirt in the mail. Considering mail time there and back, thats damm fast turn around from Leatherman. I think Victorinox, Leatherman, and Ruger firearms have some of the best factory support of their products.

I don’t have any experience with Victorinox warranty work, but I do the others you mentioned and agree 100%. Another couple I can add to that list is Buck and Surefire.

Back to lights, I’ve only owned 2 Fenix products and they are great. I gifted both a couple years ago and they’re still going strong. Olight is one I’ve also had good luck with. I’ve gifted many of the little $10 keychain AAA lights and they are always a big hit. One setting, twist on/twist off, 90 lumens is more than enough to get around a parking lot or a basement when the lights are out and you’re checking the breaker box.

I do. It’s insane. I once sent an old 84mm SAK directly to Switzerland for repair. Just a week later I got a call from the distributor in my country. They were informed by Victorinox that my SAK had arrived and was now in queue for repair. Obviously, I took quite a while, but after 10 weeks or so I received another call from the distributor that my SAK had been repaired and was ready to be send back to me. I had to pay 10 euro for return shipping. Within days after that, my SAK was back. Among things, the heavily sharpened main blade was replaced with an area-genuine new blade with old tang stamp and just a little beefier than the current blades. All old parts like the removed main blade and scales, were also returned. Remember that this was a 1970’s model! Victorinox is just an amazing ‘old school’ honest company that actually cares about their products and customers.

Can you stand the Fenix E01 v2 on it's tailcap? That's one of the main attractions for me of the E01.

Sounds like it's still a quality flashlight though. I'm glad you're happy with it!

Given the versatility of the brighter modes if needed, and the even longer run time on low than the old E01, its a decent trade off. if it is a real emergency, a 25 hour run time is nuts in a good way.

When I got back into knives I bought a Super Tinker and then bought a few OHO knives: Buck 112 TRX, Ontario Rat 2, Leatherman Wave, and Skeletool CX and they are good knives but after reading Jackknife, SonofWilfred, and Rich S I realized less is more and I bought a Tinker and Classic SD. The Tinker and Classic SD are all I really carry most days (along with my rechargeable Streamlight Microstream), super light and easy to use. I don't really like pocket clips and I went 40+ years without carrying any knife and survived. I do keep the Rat 2 and a Leatherman Wave in my car in case I have a need for it but never really use them for much of anything these days. The Jackknife, Rich S, and SonofWilfred legacy have definitely influenced my EDC.

Steele, you will most likely go the rest of your life and not find yourself in a situation where the tinker and classic will not be enough. Depending on where you live, and what you do, there is just not that much need of a large knife in modern society. If you take a few steps back and take a long hard look, the knife thing is kind of ridiculous after a point. Like you said, you lived and survived for 40+ years without carrying any knife. Obviously you don't live in the Amazon jungle, nor in the bush someplace far from civilization. I can see keeping the Leatherman in your car, although a real emergency kit with real tools in the trunk will work better. I keep an old army mechanics bag with a few real tools like Vise grips, medium adjustable wrench, large Craftsman screw drivers in flat and Phillips, some bailing wire, a folding saw, in the trunk.

Things change if you go off on a planned activity that you know you may need more, like a camping trip that will involve food preparation, firewood processing, or fish/game processing. If I'm doing that, my old Buck woodsman is on my hip. When I get back to civilization, it gets cleaned up and put away till next time. My SAK is still in the pocket though.

Welcome to the real world.

Plus 1 on the Fenix EO 1. I had a slightly larger model for several years, but then I got the EO1. Big difference in pocket carry. I carry mine loose in the left pocket with my SAK Executive. Perfect combo. I use that little light everyday it seems. And I live in Florida! The Sunshine State! I carry a selection of SAK's or Buck Slippys in my right pocket during the work week. I've got a whole tackle box full of knives I need to thin out. I don't use them really. I'll keep the Buck knives. I have a little friend at church that is going to be a fine young man. I'm thinking I need to set him down and go through that box together. I've gifted him a couple of SAK's and I think he's a knife nut! We shot BB guns together last night and he's becoming quite a shot.

Even in the sunshine state, it still gets dark every night. And size does matter for real everyday carry. Less is better as it will always be with you, like the small SAK.

And make sure that young man learns the Holy Trinity. Sight picture, breath control, and trigger pull.

Edit to add this morning, Wednesday, February 1st; Well, good old Texas ice storm took out power just before dawn today. Getting up and around with the help of our little Fenix flashlights. Power came back on at 10:40 am. It was nice having a small flashlight that is aways on me in the same place to see in the dark closet, and seeing in the dark garage to pull the emergency disengage of the electric garage door opener so as to get the car out and go get some nice hot breakfast at Panera's.

Never can tell when Mother Nature will toss an ice storm, tornado, hurricane, or other temper tantrum in our life. Its up to ourselves to say; "Let there be light!"
