The corrosion resistance of 1095 carbon steel

Not to mention that a bottle of mineral oil is dirt cheap and lasts for-freakn'-ever! And it's widely available. Any pharmacy will carry it.
 
Even if you don't remove the rust and just let it fester the knife will still be useable for your entire life. It takes a long time to rust a knife to the point of being useless. To put it into perspective I believe you have swords being dug up in your country from a thousand years ago that are still razor sharp.
