The Cowbell Build Thread

Everythings wet formed and 10 of the sheaths are burnished and ready to oil.

I appreciate the patience, Setting up a box of rocks so I can get some consistent photos. How's this layout, too busy? Just a box of rocks outside sprayed with some water.

(Cherry move, you can see the putty under the sheath)

This one in blue Richlite, heading to a friend as a gift.
Super clean leather work, if you didn’t say anything about the putty I would have just thought it was another stone.

Looks great John, like your by the creek side...

Looking at the rock, & figured a potato would make a good knife holder, & still look like a rock... ;)
That's a damn good idea Randy, photos from tater crik!

Thanks Scott. Trying to figure out a simple photo layout for these 12 to show the available colors.

I love it!👍
I actually live in Hilltop Estates, beside Hatfield Road lol!🤠
Haven’t seen any HillBilly Zombies, not lately anyway…🧟
(No Zombies for some time, “brains” is mighty scarce in these here parts, I tell you whut!!)
It’s gettin late…
Gnite John, the rest of y’all too…

I think I would try and photograph them individually in the same position on the same back drop. Trying to photograph multiple knives at once can be nightmare especially 12 of them.

I'm with you there, I've got that box o' rocks set up and when I get these all finished I'm gonna try to set up a tripod and get some identical shots in the same lighting.

I get asked often about certain handle materials and end up digging through my phone to find random examples, this way I can have a reference in one spot on the website and just send a link. That should be a big help when folks are trying to decide.

Hey John…
Hope you’re all doing great in Beautiful Montana!
Im just wondering which thread is best for keeping up with y’all?
Thanks in advance, best wishes to you & yours!

Do good Randy, summer is always a busy time for us. I guess we're kind of all over the place in the forum but I think we congregate most in here or the Purple, because ice cream has no Bones thread

Sheaths are completed, knives are being sharpened.

These lanyards are basic and easy to snip off if you're not a fan.

A day run of the photo layout below, it will be nice to have all the materials catalogued. I may also make a video to show them and explain Dibs and the Newsletter.

I really appreciate your guys patience, I should be able to get the sharpening done, photos taken, video recorded, and get them packed up and shipped by mid next week at the latest. I'd like to get them out Friday but can't promise that will happen, too many variables in the summertime!

They look great!!
That pocket clip looks really good on there!!
What am I saying, the whole thing looks fantastic!!
That Blue really pops!

I’m gonna go out on a limb here & say…
I would rather wait a little longer, and have you
enjoy all the summer variables as they pop
up, than have you miss enjoying something 😉

My regards to your crew!!

ditto. Enjoy every moment.

I too like the lanyard. I couldn't tell ya out side of a kitchen knife or something how long its been since I've built a knife without one. My customers absolutely demand one. If you decide on doing the knot with the round string make sure the knot is up against the knife. I've heard and seen of guys losing their knife if there is a loop formed by the knot away from the knife. Riding through some brush or something and some brush gets caught on that loop and pulls the knife out. Then they realize it they're missing their knife couple miles further on.

I'm glad you brought this up Dave, I don't make a lot of lanyard style knife handles, but, early on when I started making knives I soon added Loveless style cam lock sheaths for my knives. My personal hunting knife at that time was a small crown stag hunter with about a 3 1/2" blade in a Loveless style sheath I carried on my belt. I was constantly pushing it back in it's sheath when I would be out rabbit hunting and I've had it pulled completely out of the sheath a few times as well. This is why all knives, I make, with a crown stag handle have a sheath with a keeper strap on them.

Great points guys, I'm fooling around with different leather weights to see which is gonna work the best. The one above is a 2-3oz and is on the flimsy side. 4-5oz seems to work out better and I'm gonna shorten them up a bit. If I get round leather cord in the future I'll be sure to tie he knot close leaving tails instead if a closed loop.

I use 4/5 or 5/6 oz oiltan for the strings as we call em. Started out using scrap from chap projects then got to the point where I’d buy a side just for strings. My daughter is the past master at this job and could do a batch of 35-40 knives in an half hour including cutting the strings. She has literally done thousands.

Your lanyards are fine John, there is nothing for brush to grab a hold of on yours. Stuff like these big monkey fist knots, or the large lanyard beads can be a problem also, as far as getting tug on by brush out in the field.

Nobody make any more suggestions to John please, so he can stop *fussing* over these workingman's knives and mail them to us beat on! 🤣. They are prettier than any of us already...

^A man that knows that fussing is my worst enemy!

We are so very close to getting these shipped, I hope to have everything sharpened by tonight.
