The CQC-7 Story Continued

Brian Williams said:
I'll always look back on my adventures with a Cqc-7, with fondness. From the time I used a rock to hammer one into my vehicle's ignition, so I could force the ignition to turn and start the car, or the time I had to use one to cut an improvised escape hatch in the roof of my sinking car. That knife never failed me, not once.

But seriously, it's a fantastic, user friendly platform. I have 5...at least... :(

The CQC7 is my favorite knife. My first Emerson was CQC7 mini and I use it for everything I got it partially serrated and I have cut tree limbs and even had to cut a golf ball in half to make a handle for something I could have used a saw but wanted to put my Emerson to the test and it preformed but did have to compaate for the chisel grind and it cut a little crooked but it was OK.. I use to cut boxes card board strip wires.. Sad to say I have sent off to be repaired but not because of hard use it has developed a late lock up and making blade play up and down but was still very useable but i WANTED IT FIXED. I have a CQC 7 2006 regular size but carry cernt times but it is flawless and dont have the heart to mess up at this time. also have a Emerson multitasker EDC 2 and Iam carrying this til my cqc7 MINI comes back from the doctor..hope they do a great job but iam sure they will.. Thanks for reading..Emerson for life I have had Mini comander and others but nothing compares to CQC7 reg or Mini..and I do like serrations in case I need to cut something strait edge would have truoble with.

I don't know if this thread is still alive or not, but here is my story.
In 1996, I worked as a computer geek. My days were spent in front of computers. Either building them or programming them. I still don't know how exactly I stumbled upon a picture of a benchmade 975SBT but all I remember is, I had to have it. I purchased that knife and started carrying it everyday in my daily routine. That was the most I had ever spent on anything knife related. I can't tell you why, but I abused the hell out of that knife. I did things like turn screws with it, cut plywood and carpet, and even opened up tuna cans with it. Life has a funny way of changing on you. In 1999, through some strange course of events, I found myself in the ***** academy. 6 months later, I was a search and rescue person and guess who rode with me to all those calls. Yup. That old benchmade cqc7. in the course of rescues, it cut everything from aircraft skin, to seat belts, to clothes, MRE pouches and years later, cutting diaper boxes and back yard fruit. 13 more years of service I got out of that knife, until I left it somewhere in the forest effecting a rescue. It must have fallen out of my pocket during the helicopter hoist, as I went back to the scene and it wasn't there. Two weeks later, I had bought another CQC7 to replace it. (the new one being an Emerson CQC7 with the wave feature). I still have that one. I don't do rescues anymore. I am an instructor these days and talk a lot more than I actually do. But I make sure to emphasize the importance of high quality equipment to the younger generation.

A few yrs.ago a member contacted me & asked a favor....You know people in SF & other branches...I want you to give some knives away to them! He said, only things I ask is....1)tell them Thanks for their service..from an old troop 2)do not give my name .So I get the knives ....first give was to a RANGER,...he couldn't believe it.He said.....nobody gives us anything..thank you(he gripped that knife as if it was gold)I told him I was just the messenger.I swear I saw some wet eyes.So off to the others...even gave one to an old SOG trooper.I made sure to notify the giver with each response to his gifts.Gave all away(these were NOT cheap knives...trust me)!I got more out of giving than you would believe.I get a gift in the mail...CQ 7.I tried to send it back....HE...said nope, token for what you did! No amount of $$ could buy this knife from me.

My story is stupid, but I'll just tell how I discovered Emerson knives and fell for the CQC-7. It actually started in about 2004-2005 while I was a Junior in high school. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater had just come out and I was absolutely in love with the game (it's still my favorite game of all time to this day). All sorts of new (at the time) concepts had made their way into the series including a more realistic hand to hand system than the previous games that was based on RBSD fighting styles with a heavy emphasis on knives that they called "CQC." I decided at the time to look up "CQC" online to see if it was a martial art I could really go and learn somewhere because my young mind was in love with the idea of it since it was the style of my favorite action hero. To my dismay, there was not anything I could find at the time that appeared to be the same to learn. I did, however, stumble upon the CQC-7 knife online.

I had always been somewhat intrigued by knives. My mother was always over-protective when I was younger but I would steal cheap gas station knives from time to time and I even attempted to hammer a pipe I found into a blade when I was young and got in trouble when my mother found me trying to sharpen the flattened piece of cheap metal in one of those old can openers that had a sharpening feature built in. When I saw that there was a knife with the name "CQC" that looked, to me, extremely cool at the same time I instantly wanted one. Unfortunately, the price of the knife was FAR out of reach at the time.

Over the years that followed I developed a greater appreciation for knives and found myself in custody of some Benchmade and Spyderco knives that I loved. The stuff over $100 still really put me off, though. In the late summer of 2012 I finally decided to bite the bullet, though. I had ALWAYS wanted a CQC-7, a knife that I had dreamt about being able to afford when I was younger and poorer, but had simply never gotten to it. I ordered one up and when it finally made its way to me I fell in love with it instantly. Admittedly not the best slicer with it's chosen grind, I loved how easy the blade was to sharpen and I loved the simple ergonomics. Of course, I also loved the wave on the model I received. The CQC-7 also opened up Pandora's Box for me in terms of knife buying. I ordered a CQC-8 a few months later, and then eventually started buying more and more expensive blades like my Strider SnG and my Sebenza. Even in the company of much more expensive knives, my CQC-7 remains an absolute favorite all-time knife for me. I just love it.

In 2005 a ash tree blew down across from my house. I walked over and started limbing and bucking it up for firewood. This kid wanders over and asks if I need help, I say yeah start loading it in my pickup and we'll drive around back and add it to the stack. So long story endless this kids father isn't around and he becomes my shadow. I basically worked the snot out of him and my wife always fed him. Years go by and kid is family, he wants to be a Marine. Before he ships out on his first deployment to Afgahnistan I go to a knife show in Eugene. I wander around and end up talking to some gentleman covered in tattoos and beards. They kindly walk me to a table covered in Emersons and pick up the 7 and say that's the "one". I pay the vendor and these gentlemen give me a tutorial on the wave and some other good stories. Tears in my eyes I give it to the kid and tell him to be good. Two deployments later and some time in Korea his times up. He's in college now and I sharpen it when he comes home. I am grateful for that knife.
P.S. When the day comes when I must crawl through the weeds to lay them down, it's you that I will call upon.
Respectfully, Chance.

I've had a few 7's in the past and other Emerson's including customs in my collection over the years but this one is going to stay and never leave. My whole collection has been sold off over the last couple of months just to pay the bills. The now soon to be ex wife didn't know this at the time kept telling me we were short on the bills so I kept selling of my collection. Then come this summer my wife serves me with divorce and a false restraining order. Thankfully I had sold all of my collection so they was nothing really for the police to take. This is my first knife back after that cheating lying ex dragged me through the weeds and will definitely never let me down.

I don't mean to post on an old thread but I didn't see an end to this- if someone had already won the knife and this is closed, my apologies.

I have a special place in my heart for Emerson knifes, especially the CQC7 and CQC6. There was a movie in the mid 90s called Night of the Running Man- there was a hit man in the movie who carried a CQC6. The movie was one of my dads favorites and the knife in it got him into knives and because of that, got me into knives. I remember my dad looking up the knife in the movie and being disappointed that it was so expensive. He settled for a Spyderdo Endura and bought me a Delica. The Endura served him well but he always wanted a CQC6. Flash forward 20 years, my dad has long passed away but his lessons and my love of knives remain. A few months ago I went into the Emerson store in Torrance and bought my first CQC7- it hasn't left my pocket since and every time I use it, I think of my dad. Someday I will buy a CQC6 to pass on to my kids.

I don't think anything ever came from this thread. Nothing was ever followed up.
