... as a side note, most of the blades I make have a reverse distal taper along the edge, from thinnest closest to the handle end to thickest at the point. I prefer this edge geometry on most blades over a constant thickness running the full length of the blade.

If you have a grinder... otherwise it is done by hand.

Are there particular types of sand paper that remove hardened steel better than others?

I read on here recently about Rhynowet sandpaper. Haven't tried it yet but they say it is very good.
