the damascus blade ?

Yeah, but nowadays monosteels (non damascus or damasteel) can be just as strong as damascus.

In fact...TRUE damascus is kind of a mystery. We don't really know what it was like or how it was made.

What we call damascus currently is actually called "pattern welded steel"

Dag- you have it a bit wrong here. Damasteel is the same as traditional damascus but is multiple stainless layers, as opposed to carbon. It is etched as is other damascus to bring out the different layers.

Please do not mix Damasteel up with homogenous steel that is etched to make it look like Damascus, but is usually just crap steel on crap knives.
If the etch is deep enough you can feel it, like on this Elishewitz folder I have:

Kris,

Thanks for the info.

I have seen many knives marketed as Damasteel that are apparently the "etched homogenous" steel you refer to.

Bad information begets bad information.

Damascus has become a very general term for layered, forge welded steel. Damascus can be good or bad depending on the types of steel used and the skill of the person who forged it.

I use a lot of Alabama Damascus made by Brad Vice. He also makes Damascus for Kershaw and some other production companies.

The Alabama Damascus that I usually use is made from (4) layers 5160 spring steel, (3) layers 203E low carbon high impact High nickel mild steel alloy, (3) layers 52100 ball bearing steel, and (3) layers 15N20 band saw blade material. These 13 layers of 4 types of steel are forge welded and then folded 5 times to achieve 416 layers.

I talked to Reese Weiland about the history of damascus. True damascus steel has been lost in history. What we have now is called (very un-PC) "faggot welded" steel (a faggot s a bundle of sticks).
