Been looking to get my wife a knife. But today after leaving her fav taco truck joint she called to inform me that she would like to get a knife. Guess some nice middle age Mexican guy (didnt speak english) approached her to say how happy my boy seemed. Guess it finally hit her that the man could have been a crack head or killer or whatever and she would like to have something. Finally get to take the wife knife shopping....do I dare dream she will want to go gun shopping one day?

YES!!! All dreams do not come to be true, but dreams never dreamed NEVER come to be true.

Had a girlfriend once (yes, it's true I did have one :D despite what some people think ) who did not understand why I liked to go to the range and shoot guns a lot. Then I finally talked her into trying it. The good news was she liked it. The bad news was, she found someone at the range she liked more than me. :(

Oh, well. You win some, you loose some.

Well.......i guess its the little victories in life. Personally i wouldnt have glossed over the fact that my significant other could have been in danger but........

Ha! On a serious note though, I would also consider getting proper training on how to use a knife for self defense.
Just flashing a knife to a potential offender doesn't have the same effect as holding a gun.
Good luck; be safe.

If she wants to be armed for self defense or defense of family, get her a good handgun. Training is much easier.

CCW, hands-on pistol training course (do it together, it'll be fun), Emerson Mini-commander (maybe one of Emerson's courses since you're close to the west coast) and yes: mace.

You're in Arizona, not the Peoples Republic Of California or it's sister state, the Peoples Republik Of Maryland. If you're talking self defense, nothing says defense like Glock or Smith and Wesson. Do you really want your lady going one on one with some nut job with only 3 or 4 inches of blade between her and something really bad? Firearm and pepper spray over any knife. We love our knives, and they are great cutting tools, but don't let the obsession over sharp objects over rule reality.

Get her a taser and some pepper spray.

A knife is an absolutely terrible choice as a first line for self defense, and even as a last resort, results can be questionable.

Even with extensive training, it should still be a last resort.

Yeah. I don't know about you OP but I wouldn't think my wife could defend herself with a knife. Chances are higher that the knife she pulls out will just be used against her. There's also the option of avoiding skeevy taco trucks. :D

CCW license and TRAINING beyond the basic pistol course. Advanced courses are a must. Practicing at the range is a must.

If she is going to carry a pistol, definitely make it a pistol that she will actually carry.

Mace is great too. When my wife and I were in college, she carried mace around in her purse. It wasn't an extremely dangerous area, but there were some homeless/crazy people around and you never know what drunk college students are willing to do.

go ahead and get her the knife while she is willing to get it. My wife mentioned getting a gun when Katrina hit. We are in Cali and the news footage made her realize that not all individuals have a community spirit during a disaster. I didn't have $$ for a gun at that time, and after getting enough put together to get something, she'd changed her mind.

I gave my wife a can of the mace, I replace it every two years as a just in case to ensure that it will work when needed. I've also prepped her with its use meaning if she has to use the mace, to not hesitate and empty the canister into the person's face and skin while staying calm enough to map out an exit strategy to safety which translates to a crowd of people, police or wherever the assailant might not want to start trouble.

PS Having been to Phoenix and Tucson I can say that those skeevy taco trucks are so unbelievably delicious its hard to live in that state and say no to it. Between the stewed pork and the salted beef, cheek and all of the other choice meats. Go see for yourself though and then see if you could avoid the trucks. :D

+1 to Taser/Pepper Spray. At least with one of those it's somewhat OK to assume incorrectly vs. shooting or stabbing someone.

There are better choices for self-defense than a knife, but WHO CARES. Buy your lady a nice knife that she'll use.

If you really want to get technical about self defense, there is a whole subforum for such nonsense. Personally, I just dress up in shoddy thrift-store clothes and wear a sandwich board that says "I HAVE AIDS". Seems to work alright.
