The Death of Grass

A quote from Kevin Duffy (with which I agree ):

"The herbicide industry has convinced most consumers that a manicured lawn of lush weed-free grass is a desirable healthy plot of earth. Nothing could be further from the truth. The next time you go into a lawn and garden centre, take a close look at the warnings on those pesticide products. There are many times more words devoted to the hazards of these products than to their application. The other prevalent type of products promoted by the industry are various dicot killers which prey upon the evil dicots (non-grasses), e.g., dandelion and its cohort in crime, plantain. It makes me cringe to see these two wonderful plants maligned. Destroying all plant life except for the monocot grasses results in a monoculture that is unnatural and unsustainable. A manicured lawn is basically a wasteland in nature's balance."

With the state of the economy here in the USA, you'll be seeing ALOT more weeds growing this summer and not just on a foreclosed property.

Keep in mind, what a lot of people call weeds, are wild foods, medicine, cordage fibre sources, etc.

Grass (lawn) on the other hand, is good for nothing.

Form follows function in my world. YMMV.

I'm willing to be that there are natural habitats where mammals survive without grass...I 'm guessing something like Antarctica. In such a situation I would expect that Inuit lifestyles would be the template for others to emulate.

Hmm... no steak anymore. I'd just do what the monks do. Live on beer.:D

But once the bottled stuff is used up there will be nothing to ferment the beer with

It would be hell on earth I tell ya, hell on earth without my precious landshark!!! :D

You can make alcoholic drinks from potatoes and the like. I believe you can even make them from grapes! :D

Cattle will eat all sorts of green stuff not just grass. Deer can be farmed too. The problem would be the switch-over period, in the story all the grass in the Old World dies over a year or so.
Potatoes are more productive in terms of calories per acre than cereals such as wheat or oats. Again the problem is preparation. Inevitably, the majority of the population would die before agriculture could re-adjust. I think "civil unrest" would be an understatement for what would follow.
The issues I was thinking of are firstly, how you would secure a food supply for your family and secondly, how would you go about protecting it, what sort of problems or threats might you expect and guard against?

Barley is a member of the grass family, which is needed to make beer or wheat for say a Hefewiezen. So no beer for you. However Hard liquor could still be made. Vodka can be made from potatoes and other liquors could still be made. But bourbon and all alcohols made from barley or weat would go by by. Surley it would be a dark day. Of course Whine was already mentioned.
