Learn something new and useless every day around here

it made me laugh though. humor is in short supply lately.

course, now i'm vastly more mmm inspired to go out in the woods and make one of these in the snow. less ticks. i'd say NO ticks, but the damn things are year round, -20 or not.

Oh I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. New and useless internet things make me laugh too.

Moose. you need to mirror image your avatar. I'm tired of that Moose always looking to the right.

Here are the pics I took of my shelter from the contest... full name: Joe Fowler (if you use them).

Not sure if all of you remember it but we had a debris shelter contest here and some folks did a really nice job. I'm writing an article on debris shelters and have a few photos from the ones we have done but need some high-res photos of different shelters. There was one in particular that had snow covering it. If yall still have these photos and can size them about 1800 pixels wide at the widest point in 72 DPI then I would really appreciate it.

the total dimensions in pixels are more improtant that the actual DPI resolution of the image. the only limitation there is the percentage the image gets scaled at when set up in whatever application the magazine is using for prepress (which will probably be either Quark, or InDesign) since you generally want a 300dpi image for print at whatever the final size is, 1800 pixels wide gives you 6 inches before cropping.

i've only hit the limit of how much an application could scale a pic on VERY rare occasions and it's simple enough to resize it if you know what you're doing.

buuut then i've had people try to send 14' x 48' billboard images in at 300 DPI and complain because they couldn't make the file that big, and billboards actually get printed at 9 DPI and worked on at 300 (usually, it just makes it easier when printing proofs, and when i did them you couldn't actually make them 9 DPI in Photoshop.)

not meant to contradict Jeff, just saying that the total pixel dimensions are more important than the DPI dimensions things are set at, and i've had to explain this MANY times when working prepress... it sucks when you get a 300 DPI image that's only 150 pixels wide and they want it to cover half the page or more.

1800 pixels wide works great for the size we plan to print though.

Appreciate the info on this. Explained very well. Many time I get people asking how to send photos for print and I will tell them the pixel size I need and they always want to know the DPI.

Joe, can you email me the first and fourth pics you posted above. The inside shot is something I really need and you did a great job putting the attic in :D

My email address is jeff@jungletraining.com

Thanks!

I'd say invert the moose, but some of the Canadian members might try to kill Moose.

Question about Post #2, Shelter #2 (guy in red jacket crawling out):

Would using the terrain like that be problematic should it rain? It looks to me like water run-off would naturally channel right into the shelter, defeating the purpose of "staying dry". Or is that just a trick of the light/depth perception issue from the photograph?

Good job, everybody.

Jeff, which magazine will this article appear in that you are writing? Sure sounds like one I need to purchase a copy of!

Oh sweet, I am hunting for pics on the desktop right now. Anything you're looking for in particular Jeff? Completed shelters, in-progress framework?

I assume Jeff took the pic of me water testing my shelter from the original thread?

All my stuff is on page 5. If there are any of those pics you're interested in, I do have all those full size still. I'll see if I have any that seem article worthy.

Here's the original thread for anyone looking....
