Anyone has experience heat treat high alloy steel like D2/3V in electric kiln without using foil protection? Importing 309ss foil from USA is rather expensive... if the possibility decarburization is not very bad that it can be grind out then I may change my decision.

Use the foil, an inert gas for shielding or an anti-scale compound like this https://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-...accessories/anti-scale-coating-prod23076.aspx.
The de- carb will be very deep. I forgot to wrap a d2 blade once, by the time I ground to hardened steel from each side about half the blade was gone. Needless to say the blade was scrapped.

A couple of months ago I tried it on a piece of d3 and kept it at 1775 for 30 minutes after the oven was at temp. I found the decarb was about 1mm deep.
I'm moving on to doing kitchen knives out of d3 later this year when I get the time and will do the grinding post ht. Alox belts are dirt cheap in India where I'm at.
