I thought this might interest some !
For a while I have been looking for a medium/small edc fixed blade but could not find exactly what I was looking for. Some I considered were these by BRKT which although nice, did not quite fit my criteria.....

And then Stomper ( John of JK knives ) had this contest on his forum where the knife design which received the most votes would be made by him. My design came in second by one vote but I had already asked John if he could make my design anyway !
These drawings show how my design progressed as I kept tweaking it here and there.......

I doubt this design will be to everyones tastes but I designed it for my needs and so I don't expect it to be everyone elses.

I can't wait to see how JK brings it to life, I love my Hiker from him but I'm sure this is going to get even more use !!!!!

Yeah I gotta say I wanna see this bad boy when it's made. Definitely an interesting design.

I voted for it, was really hoping this one won. Oh well, can't wait to see the finished project!

ohh shoot pit, sorry man, that was the thread I was looking for, but I guess I missed it. That will cetainly make a nice EDC man,

I like the design a lot but at that grind and thickness will the point be strong enough to drill with?

Looks quite like a fixed-blade spyderco, without the spyderco hole.
I can see alot of interest in it from people, but i just have to ask.... Why the wide/broad blade? Can this wide a blade do something that a narrow blade cannot? Or is it merely personal preference?
Please enlighten me!

Interesting design. The handle went through quite a change from start to finish. Any reason behind the radical handle redesign? It will be interesteing to hear the ideas behind the changes from first draft to final design.

Thanks

PS, I love all the hike pics you post and tiny terror is a doll!

One reason for the wide blade was that if the blade point is kept at centre line or above it will give you more cutting edge than an equivalent narrow blade....if that makes sense !
It also allows you to choke up on the blade for delicate work and also allows for a more gradual taper from spine to edge !
Another obvious feature would be it gives more rigidity over a narrow blade of equal stock thickness !

Your first point definately makes sense. But would the increase in cutting edge be that relevant?
As for choking up on the blade... I don`t see that it would be a problem with a narrow blade, say, half an inch wide. Might be a good point you made, i just can`t seem to grasp it.
I also have to ask, how you figure it gives more rigidity over a narrow blade of equal stock thickness? Not to mention, how rigid do you need a knife to be?
(Note that i said knife, not prybar.)

I`m not out to get ya.. I`m just interested, as i see alot of really wide blades out there, from spydercos, to kabar-beckers, koster nessmuk, busse, etc. And i can`t for the life of me understand why one would need that wide a blade. Unless you skin critters a lot.. As i`ve been told you need a wide blade for skinning.
(Though, if i`m not mistaken, i`ve seen pictures on the web of a guy skinning a deer or sheep with a fallkniven tk4, or some other narrower blade.)

Going to an extreme to make a point, imagine bending a standard steel rule, now imagine trying to bend that same stock thickness if instead of the regular 1" high it was 12" high ( thus a square plate ) a lot more effort would be required for the latter !

I have to respectfully disagree. I can see it being relevant in a twisting kind of motion, but not in a simple bending/prying motion.

I`ll make my point. A single normal sheet of paper, would not be harder to bend if it was 120" by 120", than if it was 12" by 12". The material is not really important.

I guess i must be thick-headed, cause i just can`t wrap my head around it.

Anyway... I think it`s great that you`ve designed such a knife, and i hope it`ll be to your liking. From the comments, i think you have a winner on your hands. :)

LOL ! I do a lot of my thinking when I've consumed quite a few beers so I may well be wrong !:D
All I can think is that when I was a welder/fabricator I could bend some 1"*1/4" bar easier in a vice than I could bend the 2"*1/4" or 3"*1/4 " !

Do you remember if there was any significant difference between the length of the stock you bent? Length makes a huge difference, width, as i`ve said, not so much, if any at all.
Ofcourse, i could be wrong too. :D
