Shields give a knife part of their personality. Witness the amazing proliferation of the Bollocks/Chickenbone shield on customs and production knives recently.

Then there are the various shields denoting punch knives. The Remington Acorn, and the Cattaraugus disc, and the Robeson "BP".
There has been a lot of chatter about shields in the last while, so I thought I'd pose one of the million questions that pop up every time I ponder a handful of old knives.
This "double bump" (DB) shield (top knife, below) appears to be unique to Empire knives, and I was wondering if anyone has ever seen it on another brand.
The one under it has been referred to as an "Empire" shield, by none other than Schrade when advertising one of their own knives made with it in the 70s or 80s. And it appears more frequently.
A quick survey reveals about 5% DBs, and 10% Empires on the knives in my collection.

If you have one, perhaps you could post a picture?
Or talk about a special shield you have noticed??
Thanks in advance!

Charlie,I do not have any rare type stuff at the moment, but what comes to mind, for me,seeing this thread.....The fish shield on those Schrade fish knives, you know, the one w/ the scales on the fish
I think it to be pretty cool & if you have one, this thread is a good place
Great knives Charlie
Thanks,
-Vince

I don't have any to add Charlie, but I wasn't aware that there were certain shields that were used on punch knives. Thanks for that info.

Its funny you mention this because I was watching an older Rem knife that had an acorn shield on it. It wasn't a punch knife, but the shield didn't look like it fit correctly. Not having much knowledge of the old Rems, I didn't bid on it.

I still have a lot of researchin to do on old Rems before I get to carried away buying.

Great pics. I'm lookin forward to seeing other styles shown too. Especially if they have a significance to a certain pattern

Here's a fish one Vince. Charlie, the first one I always thought of as a Bishop in a Chess set. Nice Empire btw.

I'm glad to see this thread, although I don't have much to add... I've enjoyed watching the popularity of different shields shift from one to the next (to the next...) in current production blades. Not to hijack... why did everyone start using the ballsack shield all of a sudden?

pukko, I think Tony Bose used the ballsack as you call it, during the Arkansas Hunter collaboration development, or shortly after, and it went viral from there!
Does anyone corroborate that memory?

Steve, nice fish!!

I think a photo thread for different shields would be a great idea! I love shields, especially unusual ones.

The ballsack shield is definitely "a la mode". I've wondered about its origins. My current best guess is that it refers to Queen Victoria. The design appears to be a chess queen merged with a... er... ballsack. Since Victoria had the reputation of being a "Queen with balls" it seems possible that it might refer to her. It seems to have first come into popularity during the Victorian era. If this is the case, the shield could potentially be referred to as a "Victorian" shield.

I will change the title! If we are anything here, I hope it is flexible!!

Nice shadow, with shield Steve. The shield dresses it just right!

Here's a Robeson BP (Belt punch??) The knife above it is a Robeson subcontract.

Here are a few different shields from various knives here in my office. I apologize for the less than stellar quality of the image. :o

From Simonds Hardware - a sawtooth shield?

And of course the venerable Diamond Edge...

Here's a shield I'm pretty sure is unique:

This one is shaped like a .22 bullet (get it - on a gunstock!):
