The Draw of Ebony Wood??

Actually, GEC is missing out as it pertains to me. They do not offer Ebony on theri Northfield brand. If they did, I'd probably have 15 to 20 more of their knives.

C'mon GEC - offer Ebony on your Northfield brand.

I have never owned an ebony covered knife. It is on my short list.

I am always amazed by the look of it after decades and decades.

It just seems to get better and better. The grain pattern, in photos where it is captured just looks great.

To my eye, ebony and steel is like a classic black and white tuxedo. Not flashy, just classic good looking color combo.

Its all been said...

I'm not going to convince you about wood...I already did it with Kevin and now he's come to the dark (wood) side :D
After all, it's a matter of personal taste. I love it. Love the looks of it, so natural, so "old fashioned", I love the smooth touch of it, its hardness, the way it stand the test of time and gets character as years pass by.
Don't feel weird if you don't like it. Anyway, since you nver owned an ebony handled knife, leave the door open. You might as well change your mind about it. :)

I'm with you on that. I've often thought some of their ebony models would look better with N'field trim; namely swedges and full polish blades.

There are a few exceptions, as evidenced by the 56 dogleg posted by JJ above. But for that one, an 85 & 73 spec run by distributors, I know of no other N'field ebonies.

They do use Ebony on Northfields but not that often. Expect a #89 in Ebony soon and I believe this #73 is still available (although I'm not a fan of the nic/pull treatment). I'd like to see some ebony #48s, Tidioute or NF or GEC would be fine with me.

Ebony is a nice looking material in the hand. My one and only knife is a bad example as it has some lighter color wood--as mentioned the pure black is the most sought. My knife looks like very dark desert ironwood. To me it looks amazing as I really enjoy the grain change. Here is a picture of my gec :)

I was fortunate to get a coal black one in my Cuban, although the brown striped version is very handsome as well.

Most people prefer the darker wood, but sometimes I do like it when they have a lighter streak in them. My #72 for example has one and I really like it.

I am still on the hunt for an older jack knife with dark ebony scales and federal shield however. It's one of those must haves for me that I can't seem to find.

If you don't like the brown streaks and want a deep black, get some Min-Wax black dye and rub it in with your thumb. You could use a rag or Q-tip but there's something abount rubbing it in with your thumb.

It is highly durable and will definitly last forever. I think it looks nice too, certainly better than any man made materials.
heres one that is something like 130 years old or so.

I went with ebony instead of bone for this one. I wanted an EDC with tough wood scales, and am really enjoying this knife!

I had forgotten about that one. Seeing the blade again I understand why.

I'd still like to see GEC offer ebony covers in all their lines.
