Happy Easter SPS

I had never heard of the Ludlow Massacre. How awful. :(

Some excellent historical notes today.

It's a rainy, stormy, Easter here. While I was watching an NCIS rerun and going down multiple rabbit holes prompted by said historical notes, I heard something in the distance. Muting the TV, I verified that it was, indeed, the tornado siren going off 😲 There are sirens in town about 7 miles away to the southeast, and one about 3 miles north of me. It sounded like the more distant one. Sound travels a deceptively long way in the river bottom. Switching to a local TV channel, they were tracking a storm. The weather radar/computer had detected rotation, but no actual funnel had been spotted. The prime area of concern looked to pass 4 or 5 miles southeast of me, so I went back to my important internet research 🤓

I don't have any coal related knives, but I do have some with "charcoal" handles ;)

When I was younger we lived in Kansas City. There were no warning sirens then. The thing that always sticks in my mind is how one side of a street can be demolished while the other side is untouched.
Early warning makes a huge difference. Four or five years ago, one went right through Jefferson City, MO. Tore up a bunch of buildings, but no one got killed or, afaik, even seriously injured, primarily because of the warnings to take cover.
Tornados are fickle. They do what they want. That's Mr. Tornado sir to you boy longhair.jpg

On this Day, April 20, 1914. The Ludlow Massacre
Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) security team and Colorado National Guard soldiers kill 21 workers, women and children during mine strike in Ludlow, Colorado. The Colony had been sprayed by machine gun and rifle fire and set on fire by the militia, and then looted by the militia after the attack.

Ruins of Ludlow Tent Colony. About 200 tents and 1200 residents.

Woody Guthrie Ballad 3:31

I know I've shown these before. I thought I had a 119 with a Coal company logo and can't find it. I wanna go to bed so it is repeat pictures for the save. Buck model 314 Trapper. "Coal Miner" limited edition. 1 of 1,000. Not indicated on the box or knife but I'm thinking this might commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United Mine Workers of America 1890-1990 even though the blade etch says 1991. Knife is appropriate as the right for unionization supported by the United Mine Workers was at the heart of the dispute.

Sweet... My uncles were coal miners in Dawson, new mexico... A a few years later after the war the town got sold... And that was the end of Dawson...

A short addendum to the Ludlow Massacre. The Colorado Governor was convinced by the Rockefellers to use the National Guard plus other federal troops to help break the strike when the private militia got bogged down. Rockefeller paid for the National Guard. Sixty six (66) men, women, and children died before the strikers were crushed, not one militia member, National Guardsmen, or other troops were ever charged with a crime.
