the edge chipped...

I let my friend use my 20", 55 ounce, Ang Khola to cut down a tree in his backyard. I had already cut down a thick tree for firewood this winter, and my buds were VERY impressed with how well it cut, so naturaly, when he needed to cut down a tree, he wanted to use my khukuri...well they came back after the tree had fell. (I had stayed in the house, talking to another friend). When they walked through the door, they all had a worried look on their faces....Jake pulled me aside into another room, and said "dude.... we were out there chopping, chopping this huge tree, and when we got like 6 inches into it, we heard a loud metalic ping, I looked at the blade and saw this..." Jake showed me a chip in the center of the hardened sweet spot, the chip is about 4 mm long, and like 3 mm deep. I guess he expected me to flip out on him or something but all I said was "Were you chopping a tree with it? You were? Well then, you didnt do anything wrong and you didnt mean to do this, so dont sweat it. I bet you hit some steel buckshot in the tree." He offered to pay for it, but I declined. My question is, How can i get this chip out without killing the zone hardening? And, I heard chips on hardened steel and cause micro cracks or something, and it can effect the surrounding blade. Is this true?-----BTW, we never did find what he hit in the tree...

Thank you so much! Its amazing that you offer to replace it even though it wasnt a defect in the knife! Thanks again! I'll ship it to you by the end of November.

I dont lend my best tools or blades less i am playing overseer to the work, sometimes not even then, I have a sack full of stuff others can happily use without my input..

You cant beat that garantee though!

"Manfacturer replaced because purchesor lent it to someone who hit a nail!"

Yes good point, if I had been standing out there with him, the "nail" that was imbeded 6 inches into a tree would have magically ceased to exist and he would not have hit it....

No but you would "know" how it happened, rather than recounting " my friend said" . you lend your tools to others they will often get damaged. same is true of your wife or car..... Most big trees round houses have nails in them, any fool knows that......

Perhaps you will learn one day, but in the mean time Yangdu foots the bill for your mistake..

The tree was in a forest about a mile away from my friends house; he owns a lot of land. I didnt make this thread asking for a new khuk, I made this thread to ask how I can get a chip out of my blade. I am VERY gratful to Yangdu and I am VERY sorry for the trouble that this has caused her. I happen to trust my friend Jake very much, and I know that he wouldnt tell me a lie about this... Once again, Yangdu, I am so sorry for any trouble this has caused you, if you like, I will send you all the money I can round up before the end of the month to help pay for it, and thank you so much for everything.

John?

You're fine. You didn't ask, Gracious Yangdu offered. And you are right.

Spiral? seems a little harsh, bud.
The situation was happily resolved.

As Kis said, John, everything is AOK. Things happen, and Yangdu was here to jump on this regardless of whether or not it was a nail in a tree or a slightly over hardened edge. Things happen. Sometimes all at once. Sometimes over years. Coincidentally, Kismet was actually able to break one of my AK's in a week after I had put it through it's paces for several years. Just happens.

In all honesty, it sounds to me like your AK had a spot that was just a little too hard at the edge. It probably would have gone nowhere after the chip was sharpened up and eventually out all together. Maybe just some hard steel at the edge. Yangdu being the class act that she is decided to err on the side of caution.

IMHO, it's good that you spread the khukuri love. We use caution in letting our friends and family use our khuks. Not because we worry about them being destroyed (unless said "friend" would purposely destroy your property), but because we do not want our khuks destroying our friends. They are potentially dangerous as so many of us have found out the hard way.

I'm glad things worked out the way they did. Let's all just be grateful that is was only a chipped edge and not a catastrophic blade failure that injured anyone.

A 3mm deep chip/impact isn't to bad. My 20" Sirupati made by Master Bura back in 2003 has a few. Doesn't bother me in the least and hasn't affected performance. I was able to sharpen most of them out. Got them while downing trees to reclaim an old campsite. I do understand your concern though. I just mentioned my dings to let you know that they probably won't go anywere. ;)

Nice that Yangdu is replacing the blade. If the old one needs a home after Yangdu see's it, I'll gladly take it and fix it up. My first Khukuri is a 15" Ang Khola that was returned by the previus owner under UB's tradeup policy. Blade was beat to heck, tip bent and edge had some nasty dings. You wouldn't know it to look at it today. :) At 1/2" and 15" long it's a small monster. I limb trees with it still.

I just ordered my second HI knife. I finally nailed a Chitlangi Bowie. I have always like the high priced high end knives with recognizable names but I can tell you this: after reading this post, I am more impressed by HI than anyother knife company I have seen so far. There was no hassle from the company, just from forumites and the problem was resolved. If I were to own a company I wouild hope I could be as upstanding as Yangdu. Thanks Yangdu, from another customer for life.

With the service HI gives and the quality of their product, I'd say they're getting to be a very recognizable name, and I think they are high end products (just not high priced products). I mean, each one really is a hand made custom, right?

On more than one other forum, I've seen people nit-picking HI products. I figure if they have to start whining about small imperfections here and there (which every hand made knife has, no matter the maker), that means that HI is being compared to a lot of the high-end, machine made knives, meaning they are considered to be in the same class as those "high-end" knives.

But I'll tell you, I have confidence that my kukris will take more than I can throw at them. I can't say that about those other supposedly high-end knives.
