The Edge-Movie

I like the movie and agree Baldwin is a Whiner but thats the character they drew up for him..
I was not referring to his character portrayed in the movie, I meant the mans true character, or in this case, the lack there of.

BTW, Great photos of Hopkins and Lyttle and his knife, and the close up knife picture as well there guys. I have never seen the knife in a still shot before this. Very nice indeed.

Coincidentally, my Mother just brought that Indian(motorcycle) movie over for me to watch today. I can't wait to watch it.

One of my favorite movies in which a knife plays a prominent role. What I really like is how the knife is portrayed as a tool rather than a weapon.

I love watching city slickers in trouble haha.

I just wish I had Hopkins characters photographic memory to remember every line in the survival book he read hrs before they got in the s hit.

Must of taken hrs to sharpen large sticks with that small blade ;)

Skam

Sorry, I guess I have to be the odd man out, I thought it was cheesy and unrealistic. I also did not like Hopkins or Baldwins character, my wife says that I over analize movies but I think they would have been dead in 3 days. I liked Snow Walker and A Cry in the Wild a lot better. Chris

One of my favorites. I thought it was very realistic and that Hopkins and Baldwin played there roles very well. There always seems to be someone like Baldwin around that will piss on your parade when the chips are down. My only displeasure was hearing that the survival book was not real. I loved the fact that he gleaned and put to use every bit of info that was necessary in order to survive.

You thought the whole bear scenario was realistic? Killing a full grown grizzly bear with a sharpened stick? Making a coat out of the skin in what, 2 days? Catching a nice size trout with a bent pocket watch hand. Getting killed by falling into a punji pit, Yall make a lot of punji pits up in Deming?

I think Leonardo de Caprio killing a shark with a knife in The Beach was more realistic.

Yeah, I seen on the old cave man movies where they killed dinosaurs like that:.) I also did read where the Indians did it. Remember, he did heat treat the tip in the fire so it wouldn't blunt as the grizzly fell on the stick. And I sure would try it if it came to life or death. It would take less than two days to make a coat from bearskin, but I wouldn't put it on. Punji pit? I am somewhat new to this area so I can't speak for the natives here. But I don't have grizzlies trying to eat me. So the trout thing may be a bit over the top, but it does not make me not like the movie.

Well, I'm new here and ought to keep my mouth shut, but I have to agree with this guy!

I watched it with my dad, who is a retired prospector and bona fide crazy bushman a few years ago and we were in tears the whole way through. The bear that stalks them, pushing over a tree to make a bridge so he can keep running them down...um, maybe not so realistic!

The "brilliant" Anthony Hopkins who can't figure out which way is North and resorts to trying to make a compass to solve the problem? How many simpler ways are there that a guy so well-read he can correctly identify the obscure carved paddle on the wall of the lodge ought to know?

I don't know. Maybe I'm being ridiculous, but I didn't think much of it as a "bush" movie. I do agree that seeing Alec Baldwin get impaled was satisfying, though. Although I'm not sure how easy digging a pit that deep in Alaska would be.

Sunnyd, I am with you. If I was a movie producer I'd cast Baldwin as the guy who dies in every movie I make!!
He is a whiner in real life too.

Runningboar, I agree about the bear scenes. I'll let them slide on how quickly they tanned the hide, but, it would have been more believable if they had found a way to drive/lure the bear near a cliff and push him off, or, Some kind of large tree stump or boulder as a dead fall style of trap using a fish as bait.

The fishing part was so easy to make believeable, but, as you pointed out, you can't reliably catch a minnow on a bent watch hand?? A more believable example would have been a pair of wire frame glasses, bent into a hook.
They didn't really put any thought into that, at all.

After consuming an entire human being, would the bear continue to pursue them?? Seems like he'd have a huge case of "Deer gut" ? ;)

So true. But who couldn't help but be pumped up knowing that any second the bear could get his paws on a true blue whiner!

Speaking of the deep pit, didn't Hopkins jump in the pit, pick Baldwin up over his shoulder & carry him out? Pretty amazing feat there! I must have missed the pulley system he made with his knife. I haven't seen it in awhile, but didn't Baldwin live? I thought the stake went through his leg, (or maybe his side?) but maybe I'm wrong. All in all, I thought it was entertaining.

i just got done watching the movie this afternoon. and was wondering why no one else had a knife with them?and why no bic lighters? and yes i thought baldwin was a whiner! i also wondered if charles went into business with L.Q. Jones to open morre hunting lodges? how much bear steaks can you eat without any A1 sauce?:)

1. Because it is not PC to carry a knife.
2. Only one smoker and besides, we would have lost all the drama in watching a wet whiner with shaking hands with what, a half a dozen matches, try and do something he has never done before in his life, light a fire.
3. Wow,for only $500 million each, how could he not???
4. And the last one depends on just how hungry you are. But did you know you could open a shell and use the gunpowder for seasoning salt???

There is a real lack of decent movies of this genre, so instead of looking for goofs or inconsistancies I just watch it and enjoy it.
Jack Lowe, noone had a knife or a bic because they werent survival oriented, and their struggle to survive without the mind set was pretty much the plot of the movie.

One of the silliest movies I ever saw. I was rooting for the bear. Sorry, my 'willing suspension of disbelief' just got suspended.

To sharpen large sticks with little or no blade. Burn the ends slowly in the fire and as they burn off use a rock to scrape off the charcoal on the out side working to a point. Plus the heat hardens the tip. We did it as boys quite a bit. The resulting spears are surprisingly durable.

Alberta Ed, I have been meaning to ask you about whitehorse. I hear from several people it is the most beautiful city in Canada, I would love to check it out someday. Can you tell me a bit about it?
