The effects of BFC

Hi guys

I was wondering today, what effect BFC has had on my knife collecting and using. Once i thought about it, it's a stunning range of things.

1. Before i found BFC, i knew nobody else who collected knives. I felt penned in by my hobby, and i didn't realise that there were others that shared the pleasure i got from knives. That's the greatest thing i have yet found on bladeforums, the companionship and friendship of people who enjoy knives.

2. Before i found BFC, my best knife was a Cold steel SRK. I used that knife harder than anything i've owned since, because i used it for everything. I still miss it, and am angry at whoever it was that broke into my house and stole it from me. BFC has made me aware of so many knives that i now must have, for specific uses that the SRK used to do as a jack of all trades. And yes, i still own an SRK, and always will. For the money, it's the best knife around, imo.

3. Before i found BFC, i had no idea that customs even existed. Now, while some (including the people that used to get my money) may not view this as a positive, i cannot think of anything i enjoy as much as custom knives.

4. Before i found BFC, i beleived in many stereotypes that i have since broken, the most obvious one being the bias against Americans that i was taught to have. I'm now considering moving to the US.

To sum it up, this site has been instrumental in my continuing knife collection, And has made me more friends and cost me more money than anything else ever has.

And i've just realised, that by posting this, i officially have too much time on my hands.

For me, before BFC I HAD MORE MONEY.

Of course BFC keeps me off the streets at night.

I would have never purchased a CRK Sebenza, had I not read all the positive comments on BFC.

The companionship is what I like most too. I ended up with thei sknife hobby thing, and no one around to chat knives with until 3 am! Now I have this great home to chat with lots of people about knives.

Thanks Mike, thanks Spark.

Collecting and using knives are for me, a passion. Like all passions, its just so much more fun when you can find other folks with similar obsessions

BF has made me much poorer in cash and but lots richer in knowledge...

Hi!

I am a newcomer to this site, but it has already had an effect on my life and the way I think!
And an adverse effect on my economy, of course!:-)
I am also into watches (mechanical vintage/new) and the two internet sites I usually visit have brought me lots and lots of information, fun and most importantly; good friends all over the world! Hope this turns out the same way!

There is nothing like talking about the things you like, with people who understand it!

And James; you mention af shift in your attitude towards americans. I had a similar expereince with the watch thing. "Talking" to people all over the world, getting to know their thoughts and culture, getting explanations you would never get from the media and so on, definetely helps break prejudice and helps us see things and people like they really are.
One of the great achivements of the internet, in my opinion!

Best regards
Bo

I've posted about this before, and will probably every chance like this. Sorry for the fact that it sounds heavy, because it is just great for me.

Simply put, the forum has become the center of my life -- I really needed one -- and I've bought more knives than I ever would have believed possible, and want even more than when I began.

In addition to the company/comradeship, the forum lets you in on how much others enjoy so many knives. That's why I keep buying!

Thanks all,

LOL, never thought I'd "meet" so many people or spend so much money on knives!
I've enjoyed this forum immensely, and met some great people who I've learned alot from, and some that I've had the opportunity to do business with.
It's been a real pleasure, though, best I can figure, my average cost per knife purchase has tripled

The joy of owning and using them has increased even more though

The forums have allowed me to meet many great people...too many to list. My knife buying for use has turned into somewhat of an art collection. I know people collect ceramic figurines...custom made pocket knives are what I collect. I would not have been able to develop this hobby without such venues as the forums.

I started with the same mentality thinking my user class Gerbers I had back in the early 80s were more than I needed.

I found BFC thru my brother in law and it been a down hill slide ever since! Knife buying can get out of hand here, especially with all the custom makers that hang out here.

Like many others, I have made many friends here and I am sure that when drift off into other hobbies that I will still keep in touch with them.

We talk more about everything else than knives in BF chat. Plenty of folks hang out there until all odd hours of the nite. Beats watching TV IMHO

YES, James H. <-- we do have too much time on our hands in the evenings! I wouldn't live in any other country - GOD BLESS AMERICA (no offense folks who are from all over the world)!

Almost 11,000 member now, about 5 TIMES greater than it was 2 yrs ago! Scary part is we seem to have less and less 'good' discussions as time goes on.

I believe member burn out has been the trend and that many people have lost interests in posting.

Changes are inevitable, but the users ultimately control the destiny of BFC. I hope that we can continue to grow and still have great topics.

Thanks again Mike and Spark.

Me pre-BFC: "$50! I can't pay that much for a knife, that's insane!

Me post-BFC: "OOH, look, it's only $150, I need to get one!"

Before BFC, I used to save saran wrap box edges to use for cutting tools. For the tougher jobs, I used lawnmower blades, and flaked flint stones.

More seriously, I've learned more about steel and knives, and been exposed to production and customs, more than I ever could've imagined. Without naming brands, I've bought both production and semi-customs that completely blow away what I used to buy just a couple of short years ago. Also, it has been a great outlet to hang out with folks who have common interests (which is difficult for me to find at work

...on the downside, VG has caused several nightmares, and a strange facial twitch that I can't get rid of...

There seems to be no doubt that the presence of BFC has upped the ante for many of us. Although I appreciated and understood something of high-quality knives before I came to BFC, I didn't own any mostly because I could not at that time make the leap to justifying the cost of a high-end knife when I knew very well that the use to which I intended to put it was well satisfied by knives of lower cost (we're still talking about quality factory here, not junk. At least I've known the difference between those for most of a decade already).

BFC has made me more comfortable. Its allowed me to begin to enjoy using (and buying) a custom (a user custom, but still a custom) even when I know very well that a factory will do, and that I already have that knife!

Roadrunner - LOL - Exactly!!!!

PhiIL - Throughtout my schooling, Americans were often presented in a negative light during class. There's quite a large group in Australia that thinks all Americans are crazy (Due to things such as the litigation situation in the States, Strange stories about "Those Americans", The constant struggle for gun rights (my country is well in the grip of "Ban all guns, and there'll be no crime" type thinking, Your so called "Football" (How can it be football when they only kick so infrequently?), and the American "beer" that is sold over here....). Quite a few people act as if i'm crazy when i talk about moving to the US, and then start backing away when i explain my reasons.

Come to think of it, All you yanks ARE Crazy

I will now spend 10x more on a knife than before.

I started liking a fully serrated blade, then half serrated, now a plain edge near enough every time. I won't tolerate a poor steel unless it is a fighter and not a utility blade or I need rust resistance above edge holding.

I bought a Sebi as a result and ordered a custom knife. It also made me realise how abrasive I have been in the past and how Jerry Springer made me think poorly of Americans. This group showed me not all Americans are like that, just most
