Wow, the USPS is on their game with a early delivery.....
You guessed it, the New Emerson Jungle CQC-8 has landed with all its new glory and wonderful smell.

(the lighting was less than optimal in my pics so please allow for some color variations).

I wanted to give you the very first impressions so I did not clean the pivot up or adjust a thing.
I can tell you Emerson's quality HAS been raised. The box has crisper printing and the insert is different than what I have received before. What hasn't changed is that wonderful smell that only comes with a new Emerson knife.

The build quality of the Jungle CQC-8 is perfect. The philips screws all point the same way.

I love the new Jungle green G10 color. I dont see it showing dirt as easy as the desert brown. G10 texture is very grippy much like the Desert Roadhouse.
Blade centering is dead nuts perfect and lock up is also early but right where you want it. I like that that there is a cut out to easily disengage the lock. Not Emersons have this.

The new standoffs are satin black and very classy looking. The flow through design will allow easier cleaning. After seeing the new standoffs in person, it was a good move for Emerson.

The saber blade shape is nothing short of wicked perfection. Deep slashing and cutting makes this a very versatile shape. It will make a very good knife for the woods field dressing big game and even butchering.

Pocket clip has a nice angle to it and with the flat spine of the blade, it waves better than any of Emersons. The wave is more pronounced on the CQC-8 and the jimping is outstanding.

Great size for EDC carrying. Weight feels similar to a CQC11 that I once owned. That means anything from cargo shorts to sweat pants to jeans will carry the knife without feeling heavy.

My first reaction with the Jungle CQC-8 is that it will be my favorite Emerson design. There is too many good usable features wrapped up in one design. Any reservations I first had with the standoffs are gone The new standoffs were a great upgrade and gives the Emerson a bit of sophistication without taking away any of its rugged attributes. I hope they do make it across the entire line.
As a multi Emerson knife owner, the Jungle CQC-8 is a very significant new knife in the Emerson family tree.

Thanks for the pics and the great write-up, mystro! That is some impressive hardware you have there. :)

Hey!
Can you get that knife outa the way of that cool looking Kimber .45! :D

Very well done review and sweet looking knife!

Looks darn good. Nicely done. Thanks for the review and pics. Got me excited for mine to get here.

Turning green with envy. Really hate that I can't buy any knives this month. My next blade? I'm thinking the 8

Nice pictures, I got one too and have a couple comments to add (unsolicited I know).

The knife itself is perfect as far as I can tell, centered blade, even edge, looks great. I'm not a fan of the change to standoffs but they do look good. It's stiff like a new Emerson but that's part of their charm.

The scale color is great. Your pictures show it very well, mine not so much but the CQC-8 Jungle is a good "Ranger" green, the Jungle Commander is kind of a pale/aloe vera green, it's always just looked a bit odd to me.

My complaint: They changed the choil area on the Jungle CQC-8. I don't know if this is only for the Jungle or if it's a new modification for all the CQC-8s but I don't care for it. It's one of those small changes that makes a big difference. They have put a good sized relief in the non lock side scale to allow easier access to the liner lock (I assume). Anyway, the modification, in my opinion, is unwanted and unneeded.

Where as the old CQC-8 fits in your hand like a glove the Jungle CQC-8, while it still feels good, does not fit as well. In addition it looks like it was done as an after thought, like some one took it over to the drum sander and went, "YYYRRRRRRNNNNNKKKK" and put a big ol' gouge in it. The curves on the relief don't match the other curves and leaves a sort of weird 2 radius, non radial, compound curve on each side... ...it just bugs me, that's all.

Overall I really like the knife, the green super course scales are great. I haven't decided if the choil modification bugs me enough that I'll get rid of it, I guess we'll see.

I got mine from knivesshipfree.com They are a sponsor here and I found some good reviews on them. The knife arrived quickly and I had no issues.

Now, I love the easier access to the lock. I can work it easier with left or right hand. Similar to my QC-11 and Desert Roadhouse.

Works well either way and is a preference matter. The 8's kind of remind me of a Spyderco Gayle Bradley in that way.

Your bottom pic shows the differences in the texture of the G10. It is super grippy and I really like a rough textured G10. The Green and Brown are much grippier than the standard black G10. I found the Jungle color on the CQC-8 very close to Striders Ranger Green. Unlike the Strider color, the Emerson Jungle changes hue in different light. Its a very good camo /safari color.

Awesome write up man am I the only one who notices that the stainless steel liner is the same width as the titanium lockbar side? I'm not super experienced with Emerson's, but my 2012 Horseman's titanium lockbar side is a tad thicker than the stainless steel side.

I like the rougher texture too, it will shred a pants pocket in no time though.

Yep it looks like somebody went "YYYRRRRRRNNNNNKKKK" and is exactly the way you said.

Looking at these pictures, I really think Emerson knives now has better fit & finish - not that I had an issue with their former F&F - what I'm saying is that it seems to be even better than before, judging by your own fine specimen of a CQC8.

Good observation. Just as tough just a bit more refined without any sacrifices in toughness.

Status report: Officially my Jungle 8 is broke-in to a super smoooooth action. Here is what it took: I spent a day and a half opening the knife right to the point before the lock engages. I would work each part of the radius by open and closing in a fast short motion, gradually moving to right before the lock engages. After a while certain parts of the opening felt smooth and the end still felt gritty. That is a good sign that the coating on the blade has been smoothed off and is pushed to the end of the opening stroke. At that point, it was time to tear down and clean and re grease. Now the action is super smooth the entire radius of opening. I am talking night and day difference before the last cleaning. The detents roll in and out smooth and more precise. Opening the knife, you feel the last detent smoothy engage and then the lock smoothly roll on. No drag or resistance between each detent. The knife waves completely open even with a slow smooth draw from the pocket.
