The Endura 4...Not for me after all?

Greetings you all:)

While reading the Native thread about using the choils, I decided to ask this anyway(I always though it would be a silly question:o )

I don't seem to get a good grip on my Endura:grumpy:

If I put my first 2 fingers in the first cut out, it hurts(feels uncomfortable) when I grip the knife tight. The rounded point of the cut out pierces the centre of my middle finger.

When I grip the knife with my first finger in the large cut out, my middle finger on the second and my last two fingers at the bottom, it feels a lot more comfortable but I can't get good control of the blade then.

So I would very much like to know how you guys handle the E4 to get the most out of the redesigned handle?

I really like my E4/SE for the true fully serrated blade, but I have trouble adjusing to the handle.

Or should I just forget about this knife and carry my Military instead?

Yo Spy guy. I seen those mitts of yours and am surprised that anything short of a Bowie fits those ham hands. :D Seriously though, I've got some big paws and I know what you mean about the E4. It seems like there's less handle with just the index finger in the first cutout. But in use, I don't notice it at all. Been using my E4 SE hard the last month and I like the E4 better and better with each passing day. It's better than the E3 for me. Especially my SE model which get all the heavy dirty duty assignments.

I don't. I can't get a comfortable grip on it any way I try. Loved the E3 but the E4 is just not for me. Check out the Cara Cara, it has a pretty nice grip if you like the choil.

Thanks very much so far:cool:

This is what I mean: I only get good control of the blade if I hold it this way. However, when I grip the handle a bit stronger, the cut out pierces my middle finger after a few seconds. Very uncomfortable:(

Yah, same for me, and I have small-ish hands. There's just something odd about that handle's finger grooves/swells that didn't fit my hand.

It's why I traded my E4Waved.

The D4, however, fits beautifully.

Out of my now 4 spydercos, the E4 is the one that gets carried every day at work where I do the most cutting. The others I rotate through when away from work.

I haven't had any issues with the grip, but I don't cut for hours on end either.

I had the same problem with my E4 as does D3/SE.
The contours on the bottom of the handle just didn't work well for my hand, just as described by D3/SE.
The rounded "peaks" on the bottom of the handle get in the way of a comfortable grip. The peaks either dig into my fingers, or they force the fingers into a less-than-ideal position.
I gave up on the E4. But now it's back in action, I carry it every day.

My solution was to round off the two raised peaks that divide the handle bottom into three concave sections.
The handle is now a smooth flowing curve, and it works great like this.

I used sandpaper; the FRN sands down easily; wore close-up reading glasses to get a good look at what I was doing; went slowly and carefully so I wouldn't sand into the steel liner; beveled the sides of the newly sanded areas.
Now I really like my Endura 4. I'm going to buy a few more and mess around with them.
I also did this handle mod on my g-10 Police.

Memo to Spyderco: Get rid of the raised peaks on the Endura 4 handle. They're a prominent flaw on an otherwise excellent knife.

The end.

Oh yeah: I also flat-ground my E4 and reshaped the spine so that it looks something like the Stretch.

This is the problem I had with the Manix of all knives, the cutout "hump" caught my hand just wrong. I always wished the Manix had the Chinook's handle for that reason.

I love my E4's (I have 3 of them now- SE, PE & waved). I hear what you're saying about the ridge- the large ridge hits my middle finger just off-center in the "complete" grip- (as illustrated in post #4). But it doesn't bother me much if at all. Overall, it's a very comfortable handle for me, very well thought out. In the reverse grip, it fits perfect.

For me, the SS E4 falls just right. First two fingers in the first cutout, next in the second and pinky on the last, thumb where it goes on the back of the blade.

I do understand what you are saying though, the E2 (SS) was something like that, but still better than most anything else I have handled. The Caly 3, as bad as I wanted it to, just did not fall right at all, Stretch is better, but nothing beats the E4 for me.

To each his own, that's why Sal makes so many different toys.;)
