inspired by THIS rather icky thread over in Wilderness And Survival.

and this post in particular:

This sounds like the beginning of an epic list of things a man should never, I mean NEVER loan out, even to a best friend or relative!

here is The Bladeforums Epic List of Things A Person Should Never, EVER loan out.

i'll get started:

1: Toothbrush: i mean, c'mon, eeeeeeew.
2: Wetsuit booties (i've never yet loaned anyone my wetsuit booties and NOT gotten a bad dose of tinea for being such a nice guy, hence, i don't ever loan them anymore)
3: Your personal knife (this should need no explaination)
4: A good camera.
5: your Swag or sleeping bag.

anyone wanna add to our list?

My son is a surfer and says, "never loan or borrow a wet suit." He says most of the surfers pee in them rather than go into shore and miss a good wave. No matter how you rinse them, you don't get it all out.

I never loan the toothpick from my Vic Classic. It's in the same category as "toothbrush".

Your first edition first printing copy of James Joyce's Ulysses.

No matter how much your friend promises to give it back.

ouch, ouch, ouch awwwwe crap.

that hurts just thinking about it.

on that note, a friend of mine has a personally inscribed and signed (as in it's made out to him personally*) first edition Mein Kampf. he certainly doesn't lend that out. in fact, it wasn't until after i had known this individual for quite some time that i even became aware of it's existance.

(*long story short and disclaimer: it was given to him while a member of the german Scouts equivalent during the mid 1930's while his family was trying to figure out a way of getting the hell out of Europe. they succeeded and he is most definatly NOT a fascist)

Noone has mentioned their car/truck yet so I will. I won't tell you what happened to my brand new chocolate metalic '72 Charger SE, but I was old enough to know better, too dumb to make the right choice.

Sambo - Fascist or not, that is a priceless piece of history. Regardless of however much we may abhor Hitler, that is something that deserves preservation; possibly in a museum or rare books archive.

I loaned out my Olympus OM-10 to a friend when I was in the USMC back in the 80's and he dropped it, didn't tell me about it and as a result I had 8 rolls of film that didn't come out. I can tell you I was really pissed because that was a lot of nice photos that had taken.

I don't think loaning a gun is a good idea.

There is only one person I will loan a gun to...One of my buddies is a gun nut like me and is great at taking care of his firearms. In fact the first gun I ever loaned him I told him to take for a few weeks. He was looking at getting a Glock 23 to carry and I insisted he take mine and I carried my P2000 for a few weeks. I got the gun back just the same as when I gave it to him.

I dont mind loaning him my stuff because I know it would take an act of God for it to come back worse than when I gave it to him. If that act of God did happen I know he would try to replace whatever it was at any cost.

He's actually got one of my knives right now. After I get it back I think he may want to test my Scrapper 5 out for a few weeks! :D

I trust this guy more than my family.

never loan out something that you have only 1 of, never loan out a nice pair of glasses, never loan out a credit card lol

i don't disagree with you.

one of the most poignant War Memorials i have ever seen is at the Bebelplatz in Berlin.

this is where Goebbells did his book-burning.

under the Bebelplatz is a white room lined with empty bookshelves that you look down into via a window in the deck.

there is a sign quoting, i think it's Goethe, but it says:

"If we start by burning books, we'll end up burning people"

anyway, it's old'mates book and they swing between burning it, selling it, donating it to a museum or leaving it safely tucked away while they make up their mind.

My entire EDC: knife, light, chapstick, keys, phone, and wallet. I refuse to let anybody touch any of that stuff. I don't trust anybody but my immediate family with any of that stuff.

Never loan someone your chainsaw if you want it to come back with

the chain in the same condition sharp/clean to them dull/dirty.from them.

This not from experience ive never loaned mine but Ive heard stories.

Any book or tool. They will never find their way home. If asked to loan one, I usually just buy them their own.
