This one came to me as part of a collection I was fortunate to purchase some years back. Nothing special, but it has a certain captivating quality about it.

My favorite form of nude renderings, including those accomplished with scrimshaw, have a timelessness about them, in other words, not topical or related to a particular time or place by hair style, jewelry or other adornments. The best artists seem able to convey an element of "unobtainable" that is hard to describe but very, shall we say, fetching.

For you guys that do not care for scrimshaw, I'd be interested if you could somehow articulate your reasons for it.

Does it have anything to do with it being a fairly superficial surface treatment that could wear off? Is this the distinction between it vs. carving the handle, or engraving metal?
