The Everything Duty Knife... Does it Exist???

Essential is right... I gotta see what options that comes in cuz that's exactly the thing I'm looking for right now :)

I agree with HOC... a small FB will do anything that a similar sized or even somewhat larger folder will do including ride in your pocket out of sight. And you've got no worries about pivots, locks, hard-to-clean areas, loose screws, etc. ESEE, Blind Horse, and Bark River make some of the best small FBs around. An Izula 2 with several sheath options never has to be left behind because it won't fold and it'll do just about anything except make the coffee in the morning.

Do you carry a full loadout most times on duty? If so, I'd think weight would be a major factor and start there. If not, I agree with the above post about compromise. If you aren't opposed to a small fixed blade, the Izula/Izula2 seems to be a winner here as it will be stronger than 99% of folders, be lighter than most heavy duty folders and durable yet easy to put a quick edge on being 1095.

I'm not a spyderco fan as I don't own one are like the knives. That said the military and para military were designed by sal to meet the request of solider just like you. My dislike of spyderco is the hole, I hate it but they do make quality knives so I'd say check one out

Either one of these would meet your requirements nicely. Both have a blade length of right at 2 7/8".

Benchmade mini-Griptilian plain edge or Benchmade mini-Griptilian combo edge.

If those are too small, a full sized Benchmade Griptilian would fill the bill nicely. Blade length of 3 3/8". Top knife in picture.

The above picture shows the difference in size between the full sized Griptillian and the mini-Griptilian.

All of the above knives are tough, solid, working, easy carrying, knives and are quite reasonable in cost. All can be had for between $80.00 and $90.00 dollars.

I see that the OP didn't have a price limit. I'd suggest a Spyderco Manix 2, ZT350, or, as someone mentioned a Kershaw Blur. All of them are good solid knives that can be used for a variety of tasks.

First thing I thought was a ZT0500 MUDD. These are discontinued, but check with kershawguy to see if he has any blems available.

If you can legally carry a fixed blade, do it. Something in the 3-4" blade range, around 1/8" thick. Get a good steel- at least 1095, cpm 3v would be nice. Peel-ply or "grippy" G10 would make great handles. All that in a kydex sheath that you can drop into your pocket would = one hell of a setup.

I think most Emerson knives fit your description fairly well, depending on the Size of the blade, and which ones you can find, Emersons are a very good option
I love my CQC-13, great blade shape, amazing grip in the hand, thin enough to use for food

And Smaller Emersons like the Endeavor and SPecwar (If you can find one) are also Excellent.

But if you want Value, and Strength, the Cold Steel Triad Series are the perfect choice, the Recon 1 and the American Lawman are my 2 favorites

Cold Steel Recon 1 or an AK47 both have tri ad locks, good steel and they are tough, tough, tough.

I'd say anything with an AXIS lock from Benchmade is going to be a really tough folder. Benchmade also has a lot in their lineup with blades thin enough to lend themselves well to slicing and other "normal" EDC type tasks. I'm a big fan of the AXIS lock and have seen it hold up to some crazy stuff I wouldn't trust other lock types to. Just my thoughts.

Spyderco Military if length isn't an issue. Look into them. S30V, G10, Cheap.

while i'm shocked that i am recommending them I sent my buddy off on his tour with a Gerber 06 automatic tanto combo edge. (the good american made one with s30v steel) and he said the thing performed like a champ from preping his MREs to being a makeshift screwdriver *cringe* actually just gave me the thing to touch up today and it's still in VERY solid shape. He also really liked the over sized button on it said it was very easy to open with his gloves still on.

This is my everything duty knife. I've used every tool on it except the wire cutter. Why use a blade to punch through something when you can use the locking flathead screwdriver or the awl...

Im assuming you already have a multitool... A folder will suit your needs just fine. Your cant go wrong with a Spyderco Endura or Bencmade Griptilian. If you want to spoil yourself, get a Spyderco Para-Military or Benchmade Presidio.
