The family of SAK.

If you don't see the value of the SAK saw, as in Farmer, then I suggest you chuck all your SAK's, buy an Opinel and a Silly Girl saw, and be done with it!

Thank you and love that pic of your Orange Farmer! It's a great close up! My camera wont do close ups... 10"-16" is about the near focus limit depending on light levels.

Which color? :D

Grey to match my Seb that I've been carrying again lately .
When I get the Farmer I'll have a 1 , 2 and 3 layer SAK so I can compare them and see what I prefer
Then I'll make my mind up to what model I'll get from the Fella who makes the Titanium ones .

Great pic; now, if you'll just get rid of the finger prints, dust, pocket weevils, and short and curly's all stuck and jammed in between the tools, it would be perfect.:D

At the annual family gathering (also known as Christmas) I've noticed that my cousin opens beer using the cap lifter part of the pry tool on a SAK and my sister has a small SAK in her purse. None of my family are knife nuts and none carry any kind of knife except for those with SAKs. I can't think of the last person I saw carrying any kind of knife anywhere, unless it was a SAK.
It seems to me that as a rule people just don't go about equipped with any kind of knife, but SAKs are the exception to that rule.

At work I'm always lifting & carrying stuff and don't like to have anything sticking out like a pouch or sheath and don't like to have bulky items in my pockets either. I just have my cell phone and my keyring and that is all I have on my person - of course there is a Manager on that keyring, I'm not going to walk about without some useful tools on me! Just the other day I was hosing out the truck when I got a small sliver of metal from the brass nozzle into the palm of my hand, luckily the Manager has tweezers and I rid my hand of that small metal sliver.
I do have a bag I take with me and leave in the cab of the truck throughout the day - there is a Victorinox SwissTool in there, so I'm not going about barely equipped!

At home I get out of my work clothes and on the belt of my 'around home' pants is a sheath with a Victorinox Ranger - usually that will give me all the tools I need most of the time.
I also have my Cybertool not far away and easy to find & grab, I don't even bother going into my tool box when I only need a screwdriver.
I do have some decent knives, but most of the time I just don't need them - my daily tasks are handled quite well by various products made by Victorinox.
I consider myself to be a practical person and I just love the utility of my SAKs, they get shit done!

My SAKs are not only useful and convenient but they are also socially acceptable. In front of the general public I can fish my keyring out of my pants pocket, open the blade on my manager and cut open a box - no one bats an eyelid! I've never heard a negative comment or noticed a strange look, back when I fixed computers for a living no one seemed to mind me using my Cybertool as my main tool kit. Even in law here carrying a knife is generally illegal unless you have a good reason, having a filleting knife with you when fishing is OK but walking down the street in town with that same knife dangling from your belt could cause trouble. But it would never be a problem having a SAK in your pocket, it is just too easy to explain to a police officer all the good reasons why you have it, except a police officer would never bother to question you on why you have that item.

People like SAKs because they are great for many reasons. They are socially acceptable, legally acceptable, useful devices. They are amongst a very small number of knife based gadgets that appeal to women, men & children and there are many people that find them useful whether they are campers, business people, farmers, labourers or whatever. Broad appeal and broad acceptance make these the first choice of whole families! So the story in the OP was pretty interesting and I enjoyed reading it - but it wasn't particularly surprising.

Very well said and very true. The entire world over - all the seven seas, on land, from pole to pole - the SAK simply RULES!!! SAK production numbers are in the millions per month, that in itself is testimony to it's worldwide appeal.
