This morning I was going into the knifeshop and all of a sudden I heard a knock at the door...it was the mailman...with the famous triangle box...I couldn't open the door quick enough....:D
I opened the box in about 3 seconds...there is was...my first khukuri, a Chiruwa Ang Khola, with a horn handle..made by kumar...it's awesome, the first thing I did was chop up the box it came in to pieces...I am glad no one was watching me cause I must have looked like a little kid with my first knife...
Then I sat down and sharpened it...sorta a convex edge,,,razor sharp..impressed with the ease of sharpening!
Most of all I am impressed with the price, All this knife for such a great price....Thanks Uncle Bill

Ok Guys...what should be my next one...any suggestions!

Rene, glad you like your khukuri. Kumar makes some great ones. I have a 25" AK by Kumar. Beautiful knife. It's kinda hard to recommend a khukuri without knowing what styles you like or your intended use. If you want to try some variety, since you already have a large chopper, you might want to try a slimmer khukuri like a surupati or kobra. On the other hand, if you want to stick with the big khukuri theme, AK's are available up to 30". You might also want to check out the M43. I have one by Kumar's brother, Sher; it's another one of my favorites. God, what am I talking about; they're all my favorites:rolleyes:. Bottom line, you can't go wrong with anything from HI. Chances are your tastes in khukuris will change over time anyway. Search the HI website catalog to find khukuris that you like, and then do searches of the HI forum and archives by model name, and you'll find tons of information.

Uhh Ohhhh! Looks like another victim of HIKV Uncle Bill...
Hook, Line, and Sinker! :D :D

Impressive, aren't they??

So many choices, what to do? Your first one was a muscle knife so lets go with either an all around user or a fast light one. We'll narrow it down to an all around WWII [your preference on length, either 16.5" or 18"] or either a Gelbu Special or a Chitlangi [you choose the length]. This will give you some diversity, eh.

Rene, can you give us a quick rundown of how you sharpened your new toy? I know sharpening procedures have been covered in detail by Yvsa and Pendentive and other folks in the past, but am just interested in your approach and how things worked out, as you say it went pretty quickly.

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Svashtar

Well I kinda Cheat..cause I make knives...I used my Bador Belt Sander, on a slack belt with a 30 micron belt and rolled the edge, (convex). then I buffed the edge with my buffer and use my razor strop to strop the edge and man-o-man..scary sharp but with strength....:)

Rene - you and I use nearly the exact same process but in a different order.

I buff first to knock off the burr (I buff lengthwise, btw - not across the edge).

Then a few passes on a very old 15 micron. I do this on a slack belt, right above the platen.

Then power-stropping on a leather belt (on the platen).

Works every time. ;)

Look at this guy...gets a brand new khukuri at his door and he's already lookin' for another one...

May I humbly recommend an 18" or 22" GRS (Ganga Ram Special)?

The 18 inchers have been popping up as specials now and then. These khuks are just amazing. They have a wider, yet thinner blade. This makes them feel lighter than they really are. And boy can they chop. Add to that the very nicely designed, gentle curve from bolster to tip. Doesn't hurt that it's a design created by the one of the best master kamis (Ganga Ram), and is still executed by the best today (Bura).

Whatever you get, you will certainly enjoy it.

The first time I sharpened a khukuri-like object ...I stuck the tip into a tree, edge side up and hacked away at it with a triangle file for 2 hours...yikes!

Thank goodness for belt grinders...

Take it out and beat on it. Seriously.

Stuff comes and goes in Bill's inventory, and what came in when gets forgotten. This is important because the kamis get overly hurried at one time of the year... just before they shut down for a 2-3 week religious holiday.

When they get rushed, sometimes when hardening, they get water on the tang. The tang should be dead soft. If there's temper to it, it can snap at the handle.

Slap it on a 4x4 or 4x8, side of the blade to the wood. Hit it full strength on the other side. Sink it into a piece of wood and use a branch on the top of the spine and slam a hammer against the branch to split the wood. If it's made right you'll break your anatomy before you'll break the khuk. Do it, but carefully just in case.

If the first 15 minutes don't break it, then it'll last a hundred years. If it breaks, return it. If you don't test it then it may fail and separate when a member of your family is in line to catch it in the worst way.

The above applies to any khuk. It doesn't apply to kobras. Unlike real khuks, the kobras can be bent or broken.

Since you have an AK, have fun and find out why most of us choose enclosed tangs
( Good vibrations - NOT )

I purchased an 18" Gelbu Special and a 19" Kobra, but my decisions were illogical.

Go to the HI website and write down each model on a separate small piece of paper. Wood handled, horn handled, and different lengths all require a separate piece of paper... Place them in a small cup, and shake... Close your eyes, and carefully "feel" for the right khukuri. Go slowly; the khukuri will assist you, instead of you finding it...

Don't be silly and ask forumites to help you... They're all HIVK carriers like myself. :D My technique, at least, is non biased...

For sheer beauty, a chitlangi.
For everyday utility a 15" Sirupati.
Cause everybody says so, a 16 or 18" WWII.
As a weapon for slice em dice em, a Kobra. Any size.
For the warrior in you a Gelbu Special.
If you want to be amazed, A Yvsa Cherokee Special with inlays.
For the ultimate pleasure less than S*X, a Dui Chirra.
To decimate the forrests, an 18 or 20" AK.

After these, anything else, 'cause ya don't have one yet.:)

Oh yeah, then there are the swords. A big guy like you REALLY NEEDS one of the Himalyan Swords.

Welcome to our madness.

Dang ferguson...wish I had asked you first! I'm up to 8 HI's and none of them are on your list...although a couple I'd like to have *are* on it. I could've saved myself a lot of trouble and money. ;)

1-16.5 Chiruwa AK
2-13 Balance
3-13 Villager Sirupati
4-One of those neat little KK's
5-One of Sarge's special Bilton's
6-An old WWII from Terry Sisko (he's doing the sheath for it now)
7-Hanuman
8-18th Century
9-Oops, Uncle Bill hasn't posted that one yet!

:D What do you expect? I'm a newbie! :D

Nasty,
I never said it was the ONLY way to go.:) You just started on the
"everything else" part first! Great khuks you've got. My first, and the one that's always with me in my truck is a Bura 16.5" Chiruwa AK. Can't go wrong there.

Hey, I don't have a Hanuman or an 18th Century like you do. I'm falling behind.;)

I'd almost feel like I were showing off if I posted those photos. :D
I bet they don't see too much use, although they could, and hard use at that... Dan
