The famous triangle box came today!

My first HI khukuri was a Chiruwa Ang Khola as well. They can really take a beating :)
I think they're the best under-18" khukuri, but I haven't played with a BAS yet.

Rene, heed Rusty's sage advice and test your khukuri well. Investing your trust in an untested blade is like hunting rattlesnakes barefoot and counting on luck.

Those who've touted the Gelbu Special as a superior weapon know what they're talking about. But, you may not be into martial arts and such. When asking others to advise on what khukuri to get, it's helpful to know what you'll be doing with it.

That thing'll take a beating, so don't be gentle with it.

As for next moves... consider an HI blade that is fullered, just fer a change. Really adds to the aesthetic and the functionality. Try a Gelbu Special, Chitlangi, Hanuman, HI AK Bowie, Berk Special. The Berk Special and the Fox's Folly models have big blades and multiple fullers. YCS is outta production, but we see a few come through every now and again.

Beware, I've seen a few "plain" YCSs and AK Bowies, meaning they didn't have all the normal fittings or fullers. Still good knives, just not as fancy.

If ya want real workhorse, get one of the villager models, they're the beaters of the khuk world, and are darn near indestructible. Also make great project knives, as they are what we western folk would call roughs, or partially finished (ie, unpolished handles, brush finished blades).

Enjoy!

Keith

Rene,

Does this make you want to move more of your knives over to 5160 and hot-water quenching?

Actually, with a name like Rene, I'd expect you to already be using water to quench your blades.

;)

Take it out and beat on it. Seriously.
Slap it on a 4x4 or 4x8, side of the blade to the wood. Hit it full strength on the other side. Sink it into a piece of wood and use a branch on the top of the spine and slam a hammer against the branch to split the wood. If it's made right you'll break your anatomy before you'll break the khuk. Do it, but carefully just in case.
If the first 15 minutes don't break it, then it'll last a hundred years. If it breaks, return it. If you don't test it then it may fail and separate when a member of your family is in line to catch it in the worst way.

Rusty...Can you explain this testing a little better...I don't undersand...Slap it on a 4x4 or 4x8, side of the blade to the wood. Hit it full strength on the other side. Does the same testing apply for the AK fulltang I just recieved...

Yes, I guess it could apply to the Chiruwa Ak as well. See, if they accidentally hardened any part of the tang, especially near the shooulder of the blade, there could be an inherent stress point there that will be unable to take the shock of hard use. By hitting a target with the sides and spine, you can be assured that a defective blade will break. If it survives, it'll survive the next 100 years fo hard use.

I Guess my next khukuri is going to one of these...:D

Hi Rene,

I figured you'd eventually find your way here. I've got about a half-dozen HI khukuris now, and they are awesome blades. My favorite is a 21" chitlangi, though I think I'd like an 18" one even better. Awesome choppers.

The crazy part is when you come upon hard times and end up having to sell a few (actually a dozen-and-a-half:() and you still have a dozen more (in safe keeping!)

No...sir...not me....nope...

I can honestly say I've used every khukuri I've ever had and they all felt different. About 3.5 dozen so far.

Mystery Khuks - by various makers (12 or so)

Plus the 40 or so khukuris that I have sharpened/conditioned for fellow forum members...

I've passed through at least 80 khukuris and there's at least 10-15 others I can think of that I have yet to try out (but will eventually).

But that's nothing compared to a few 'characters' on this forum...

Is there really no way to get a YCS anymore? The Dui Chirra, and UB Special, and a YCS are all on my list.

Regards,

Svashtar

YCS? The answer to that is a qualified yes. You have to be really nice to other forumites, a good guy, then maybe one of the others will let you know when they have to let one of theirs be adopted, ( I know, at the time it seems more like selling one of your virgin daughters into prostitution ).

When it finally happens you'll understand that you've been blessed. :)

Rusty, why is it no longer made? I've seen the work that goes into that custom Kothimodo (sp) on the HI site, and it can't be more work than that, can it? Or is it a case of just having a limited run to keep it really unique and hard to find? Just curious.

Regards,

Svashtar

Svashtar

Svashtar the problem is the thin flat edges and they caused the failure of several YCS khuks.:(
If they had the old convex full edges on them there wouldn't have been a problem.
And it's just too much trouble to fight with the kamis to get them right.
Damned kamis anyway.:grumpy:

One day you wil see an UBDOTD ( Uncle Bill's Deal Of The Day ) and when you look at it, it will call you. To analogize, like girls, it may be blonde, brunette, redhead, or raven tressed. You will experience an obsession. All else will go out of your thoughts. You must possess it.

Uncle Bill maintains it's the Khuk that picks the owner.

Chitlangi

The Chitlangi & Gelbu Special are
most unlike your chiruwa AK.
In either length.
It's going to feel a lot quicker.
I prefer the lighter versions of -all- the styles myself.

The Chitlangi is more decorated.
Based on my pair:
It may run a little wider in the belly
due to two deeper fullers.
Weights of same length in same range.

But then if you really want something different,
look for a Balance.

If buying from the store,
state your preference for lighter or heavier versions
& they'll try to please.
