Brand new to the forum, and have done lots of searching on the SRK. I learned recently that here in Maine its legal to carry a fixed blade, long as it can be seen in open view. So I plan to buy thing knife for work, and just all around use. Looking for a tough blade, that isn't too expensive if I break or lose it. I already have the CS bushman but its too bulky for me to carry around. I read that the SRK has a rubber guard, is that still the case?

The SRK handle and guard are one piece of rubber. Some people find this a problem with long term use as far as the handle cracking and breaking down. I have read of others who find it no problem at all.

I personally like the SRK, but if you question the rubber handle and guard, you have other options for inexpensive fixed blades. You might also take a look at the Becker line of knives by Camillus. The Companion (BK2 I think) and the BK7 are both outstanding knives. Also Camillus is releasing the BK10 which is a 5 imch version of the BK7. Very sturdy well made knives with the 7 & 5 going for under 50 bucks.

For the price, both the SRK and the recommend BK&T knives will suit you fine.

I think that the Kraton rubber handle on the SRK would be a plus for cold weather use, but that's not the voice of experience talking. I've only used folders in wicked cold weather.

You won't have any problems with the "rubber" kraton handles. They're extremely durable, and you wouldn't even come close to hurting the handles during a thrust. I had a Recon Tanto for around 8 years, and I never had a problem with the handle -- and I put that knife through hell and back.
