The finer points of the Barlow

Edible on Fridays during Lent... 😁

New guy doesn't know the rules.
It was more of a joke, although I do have a strong aversion to them, going so far as to remove them from nearly all of my modern knives, to the point of altering screws, etc. sometimes to get them off. :D

I've even passed up a few otherwise drool inducing knives because I knew it would be difficult or impossible to remove the pocket clip.

I usually report them when I see them, but fewer and fewer get removed these days... so I've stopped.
I think they have a place on certain knives, but never ever on a Barlow. 🤣

I'm more of a "modern traditional" guy, which is why I don't spend much time, here. Also, because some of you fellas are deadeye with those revolvers! :p

The "modern traditional" category is for blasphemies like a "barlow-pattern" knife with a pocket clip.

If I really wanted to push my glasses up my nose, I could argue that the pocket clip is a very practical, if not very pretty, addition to a knife, which makes it easy to get to when you need it, easy to put away when you're done, and keeps it where you put it while you're doing other work. Since the Barlow seems to have been intended as a "working" knife, the pocket clip is an entirely appropriate way for a traditional pattern to continue into the current era. Given the number of "modern" knives which have focused so much on ergonomics that they've given up entirely on style, the simple shape of the Barlow and jack-style knives could be a welcome contrast to some of these ocean-wave-handled modernities.

But then, so does a leather slip case.

I completely agree, but would go one step further and say that if you're going that far you might as well go with one hand opening for full practicality.
I enjoy modern knives with all the modern features, but leave my traditional knives as traditional as I can... but that seems a conversation for another thread.
