When you look at a knife, what is the first thing you notice about it? What's the first thing you will check for?

I usually notice the ergonomics and check the blade steel first.

Ive only been in this hobby for around a year or so. Id have to say the first thing that i look at would be the materials used.

Having collected, used knives for 45 or so years I know what I like and don't like. Design, ergos, weight are the first things I look at. If those check out then construction, lockup, centering come next.

If I have to choose just one "first" thing it would be design. If I don't like the looks of it, then I won't even ask to see it.

Don't even need to look at it. I usually just pick it up without looking at it and roll it around a few hand positions, balance, weight. That's all I need to know.

blade shape, blade-steel, edge. There are so many other things..also.

Price. I also never enter a knife store without knowing exactly how much cash is in my wallet.

Blade and handle aesthetics. Overall materials is something new me. I've been lucky about it though.

I guess the initial impression. Something like if it looks fresh, or expectionally classy. That doesn't mean that I will like it later or get it.

The handle ergonomics, which is where most makers seem to go wrong.

Definitely blade shape and then handle design/ergonomics/lack thereof. Pocket clips round out the top three :)

Size. The size will determine if the blade shape, ergos, materials "make sense"
