The flat platens are back from heat treat

Here is my incredibly stupid question for the day. What makes one of your flat platens better than, say one that am on the KMG?

Not a stuipd question.

Nothing really. There is absolutely nothing about it that anybody "needs".

They are different though. The platen I make is geared more toward people who do a lot of grinding. It flatter, it is made of hardened steel, it has an air bearing injection port for grinding against an air cushion and the leading and trailing edged are machined into two different radii which allows you to finish grind a flat ground blade lengthwise (by taking off the upper roller), which can reduce the need for hand sanding and helps make for more perfect plunges.

All that said, I personally don't do enough flat grinding to justify one. I only made it because people have requested them.

I would also like one that I could use on the pheer grinder. If the demand is there and you want to consider it, I can supply pictures and measurements of the current platen setup.

Sorry but I can't seem to find the thread in the other forum. :( I would like to know more and most likely buy one. Thanks.

EDITED: Sorry, found it and they are sold out. :(

I woul drecommned that pheer grinder owners retrofit a standard kmg dimensioned flat platten on the frame. That way you could do a straight swap. What are the dimensions for the pheer platten.

I have used both the stock KMG platen and Nathan's platen extensively. If you're just comparing the platens, the biggest improvement for me is how long Nathan's platen stays flat. I grind every single day, oftentimes post-HT. I had to resurface the stock platen quite often, and since I used sandpaper & granite, it was very time/labor intensive. After 2+ months of heavy grinding, Nathan's platen is still flat and true. I couldn't be happier with it. I have yet to use the lengthwise grinding feature yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it out.

If heat has ever given you a problem, you should also check out his platen chiller!
