The great 12" Ontario machete

Lots of sanding. It is really sharp. I got it with a brand new sheath and just got around to putting the convex edge on it. It was so sharp it sliced right through all those layers of rubber and cordura. Now I need a new sheath!

What Grit paper did u use ?

I did the edge on a 1" x 30" cheap belt sander. For regrinding the edge, I used 80 grit until I got a wire edge. Then I used 180, then 1200 for final polish (I was out of 320 grit). The finish is not that smooth on the flat of the blade. I just buffed it with medium and then fine Scotchbrite buffing wheels on a small 1/2" arbor bench grinder. That removed the zinc oxide coating and gave it some shine. It sure cuts well. You could use sand paper of similar grits and achieve the same or better results with a lot of work.

Since I started to use Ontario CT2(with sawback, only available at the time I ordered),it is no.1 tool for me.I made sheath out of four layers of jeans, waterproof carpenter's glue between each layer, then folded, leather rivets.

The Economy version is about .076" thick, as opposed to the approx 1/8" blade of the heavy model, making it more like the Tramontina 12 incher as far as mass goes. My economy model came with a very thin edge, around 10 degrees inclusive, which makes it behave very knife-like.

there is a 12inch tram?
i know there is a 10 and 14 but a 12er, sounds great

anyone know a good way for me to put a nice wide bevel that stays the same on my new okapi 5000p?

I have had the same great service from the 12 inch Camper Model which I bought for ten bucks about 15 years ago.

Yes there is a 12 inch Tram. I just ordered two last week. Not here yet but I am anxiously waiting.

I am sure it is the original. The short machete needs some weight to cut through wood.

Thanks, that helps a lot, no Econos for me.

I have a 12inch Tram. I got it from SMKY MTN KNIFE WRKS a few weeks ago, i thing it was about 5or6 bucks...........Good blade.

Thanks for this link. I checked some of their pricing and they have the lowest prices of the 10 or so random knives I picked. Have you ordered from them before?

I have and their service was quite good. You are right about their prices, too. I saved $30+ on a Bravo-1.
