This weekend I passed 1000 posts on BladeForums. I’ve been a member here for almost 8 months, so that’s an average of over 125 posts per month, or over 4 per day. I guess I talk too much! :rolleyes:

In those 8 months I’ve been the beneficiary of an unbelievable amount of generosity: I’ve received lots of information, advice, friendship, acceptance, entertainment, and cheering up from forumites. I’ve also received lots of knives, including being the unlikely winner of THREE giveaways (thanks again, Cory and Fausto and Bob) as well as getting gifts from “strangers” for no apparent reason (thanks Greg, Dan, Dave, and Paul).

So I’ve been planning for quite a while to have a GAW of my own. Since I’ve passed the 1K posts mark, and since I’ve taught math for 40+ years and today is Pi Day, this seems like the perfect time to start a giveaway. But I have a minor reservation. My knife accumulation activity is a low-budget operation, and most of the knives I get for myself are quite inexpensive. In my opinion, they’re good knives, but they’re certainly not models that are wildly popular in the Traditional sub-forum. Having a GAW that no one wants to enter would be mildly embarrassing! Here’s my plan to avoid that.

This GAW is going to be “Ladies’ or Gentlemen’s Choice”. I’m putting up 4 knives as possible prizes, and to enter you must do TWO things:
1) Have Your Say: clearly indicate which of the four knives is your first choice, and
2) Work to Play: tell why you’re attracted to that particular knife.
This is NOT the usual “just say you’re in” GAW; you have to invest a little bit time and effort in order to qualify. But, what the hey, it's cheap entertainment! ;)

Here are the 4 knives; all have stainless steel blades and were made in China:
Buck 379 Solo – 3 inches, synthetic brown jigged bone handles;

Rough Rider RR464 Lockback Hunter *– 3.5 inches, amber jigged bone;

Rough Rider RR451 Toothpick – 4 inches, amber jigged bone;
FMjbIXxl.jpg

Rough Rider RR072 One-armed Trapper – 4.125 inches, amber jigged bone.

They’re all very solid knives, but the first 3 are single-bladed, and the last 2 are at least 4 inches closed, and I’ve discovered that my preference is for multiple blades and lengths under 3.75 inches.

I plan to run the GAW through St. Patrick’s Day (March 17); if there’s still activity then, I’ll let it run a little longer. I’ll randomly select TWO winners at that time (who have different knife choices :p).

Good luck to all, and thanks, everyone, for a very enjoyable and informative 8 months! :thumbup::thumbup:

Not an entry! Mainly because of the lack of sheepsfoot lol

Just wanted to say thanks for the GAW!

Gary congrats at your post count and please count me in;)

I like the little lockback, the bone covers are very attractive as well.

The reason I like it is because the blade is Stainless and it locks...two things that are beneficial to me as I Power wash in the Summer so stainless is a plus....I also find myself cutting hoses in many shapes and sizes so the lock is a another plus.

Thank you for a great GAW:thumbup:

Nice GAW, and congrats on a grand GT! I am in for the "ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle" day GAW ;).

I would like a chance at the RR lockback. I have never held a RR before, and have been wanting to try one for a while. Plus it is a real looker :).

Infinite congrats on the posts and happy Pi Day to you as well. I've read quite a few of your posts and they are very informative. I guess I'll throw my hat into this GAW. I love that Trapper and I'll tell you why... I've never owned a trapper, but, I've came very close to ordering one like this.

Thanks for the opportunity! I'm in for the 1 armed trapper, because I'm intrigued by the one-arm blade, and would like to find out how useful it is. Also, that's some attractive bone. Also, good pictures!
Thanks again,
Phil

I'm in for the Buck 379. Why? Because I really like single blade knives. And of the single blade knives I prefer the clip blade. I also prefer knives that are between 3" - 3.5" long. And finally I just like the look of that Buck knife. Thanks for the opportunity.

This is a very nice idea indeed, something different!:thumbup:

I'd like the Buck as I generally carry singles (well, most of the time) the other reason is relief. :D Relief?? Yes, I was fearing you were going to set a maths question of some sort and that would've sent me to the back of the class-not fond memories:eek::eek::D

Regards, Will

Oh, man, I wish I would have thought of THAT, Will! :cool::cool:
I'm often in charge of my department's Problem of the Week, so I have a bunch of challenging questions readily available; could have tried a PoW GAW.
Thanks for starting my day out with a laugh! :D

Hi there, thanks for the chance. I'm in for the Buck solo. I am a habitual whittler and the knife would be used. I have always wanted to try a single blade traditional slip joint, I have an opinel8 as my only single traditional other than a lockback that was my grandpa's.
As I said thanks for the chance and have a good one.
Oh, meant to say I have Pi memorised to 9 decimal places. 3.141592654

Congratulations on the milestone GT, and thanks for joining and contributing to our community here, you've been a good addition IMO! ;) Thanks for the generous giveaway, but may I ask permission not to enter, I've also been the recipient of a lot of generosity here, and would prefer someone else to win this - several 'someone's in fact?! :thumbup:

It's interesting to hear it's world Pi day. It was one of the very first words one of my children could say, and much to the annoyance of her mother, I'd always ask her to tell me, "What's 22 over 7 Ellie?" Not being a mathematician myself, I hope that you don't mind if I celebrate with a piece of pie ;)

Look forward to your next 1000 posts :thumbup:

I dig that Rough Rider RR072 One-armed Trapper. I'm starting a job at a plant nursery and landscape crew and this knife would be perfect to EDC to cut plastic and trim with. It's got a beautiful jigged handle, which gives it great character. I think it would be perfect new EDC and great for carving as well. Never handled a rough rider before.

I'd love to try out that Rough Rider one arm Trapper!
Ever since I saw my first one arm style blade I've been enamored with the way it looks and intrigued with how it would perform.
It doesn't hurt that it's quite a looker to boot.

Very nice GAW Gary. I like the toothpick. Don't know why I don't have one in my collection because I've always liked the pattern.:thumbup:

I'm in. My first choice would be the one arm Trapper.
The scales are beautiful and I have never owned a Rough Rider knife. The one blade reminds me of my Grand Pa. He used to shave with a straight razor and immediately when I saw the pics, I thought of him. Thanks for the generous GAW. You will be making four people very happy.

I'm in for the lock back hunter. Amber jigged bone, 3.5'. What's not to love?

Thanks for doing the GAW!

I'm in for the toothpick.
Something about the long sweeping lines of a toothpick that captures both art and elegance. It evokes a sense of style in the person carrying the blade.
