Just got my 810 Contego back from BKC. It arrived in a box just like the blue, red and black only this one is grey. :)

Just want to say Benchmades warranty Dept. is brilliant. My knife is 100% perfect. It went in sharp (just off a wicked edge) and came back with the same edge only honed. Centering (even though I didn't ask for it) is now perfect. It's lubed, loc tited and smooth.

I couldn't be happier and this is now my favorite knife. :)

Gray class huh? There's a good reason to keep your original boxes home, they're not returned as part of their intake process; the knives are always sent in the famous 'extra' gray repair box - and you're right on about customer service being tops in the business. IMO, they ARE the cutting edge!

So you sent your knife in to get a warranty repair, and they sent it back to you in a grey box?

I've bought some Benchmade knives on the forums that cme in a gray box. They were advertised as LNIB after being sent back to the mother ship for a tune up. I will add that Benchmade does a very nice job of reconditioning a knife when it's seen some use.

The point wasn't the box (that was sort of a joke) the point was to say that Benchmade has stellar CS. A couple of the guys over there worked on this with me.

I didn't even broach the topic, but received an email out of the blue from one of their techs who just wanted to improve my knife. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it to begin with they just saw a post that I wrote asking a simple question. :)

Anyway, yeah... they have certainly earned my loyalty. Grassroots enthusiasm? Check!

Then they weren't LNIB; even with the reconditioning I'd question doing business with them as advertised. Maybe...

That's exactly what they do, it's common. And again, that's why it's important to not send the product in its original box.

Keeping the box isn't always an option. I received a Bushcrafter 162 from a vendor and the USPS box and the Benchmade box were damaged so badly I really didn't expect the knife to still be in the box. The knife was there and somehow undamaged, but both boxes were a total loss. They appeared opened smashed, ripped, and with holes. Crazy.

Your example is unusual but I understand your point. You might give the customer service dept. a call to see if they could replace your box and paperwork if damaged also. M-F 800-800-7427. Once, and If they opt to replace the box, etc. keep it home if you choose to send the 162 up for service.

Can't speak highly enough about BM's Customer Service, they set the mark very high. I sent my Daughter's 585 in for sharpening and it came back better than new. It was so gummed up with tree sap and grime, that the blade would barely even deploy and that was after I cleaned it up before sending it in. Ditto for 2 more BM's that I sent in.

They were all returned razor sharp and in top notch condition. While its easy to take this kind of service for granted, I'm always impressed at the level of integrity from BM's Service Department. Everyone knows BM's knives are great; but the product itself is only part of the overall BM experience, BM really is the whole package!

Actually this is all good to hear. Been thinking about sending in my Ritter. Being an auto body guy I guess maybe I'm overly picky about things being straight and even. My Ritter blade is not straight or even. Because of this it is not centered. I'm thankful for a company that stands behind their product.

Just a word about the gray box. Some knives do come from the factory in a gray box. Such as the Ritter 558dlcm4. Gray box is used as the original box for "collaboration knives." So if you have something like a ritter you bought from someone and it's in a gray box, fear not, that is the original box.

It's a good point on the Ritters my friend, but clarify what 'collaboaration knives' means; I've never owned one those that came in a Gray box. I think the caveat would be if the box has no markings it's likely from BKC servicing...if it's labeled don't send it up there. I know this is minor but there are those that don't know about this info.

To add: actually, one of the best uses of the un-marked gray repair boxes is to wrap the knife carefully and pack it inside one going up for service. I do that all the time...! ;)

I've always sent mine in and got the box back. But It's been a while since I've had to send one in.

I never cared about getting the box back anyway. So it doesn't matter to me.

When you say unmarked, what do you mean exactly? If you mean the sticker with the model you're right, but mine is exactly like any other regular (non le) box otherwise. Meaning it has all of the regular printing on it.

I'm curious to see what your 810 went in for?

Benchmade is top notch and truly cares about their customer. As long as they keep doing what they're doing, I will be a customer for life. Glad to see that you're happy too. I might also add they are doing a stellar job on putting an edge on their knives. All of my new Benchmades, including the 810, arrived crazy, danger-sharp.

Now if they can only introduce a flipper with a bigger blade, and IKBS...
