The hamon, fancy looking or truly functional

Hey guys,

I asked this somewhere but it was a hijack in another thread and understandably I didn't get an answer so I thought I'd try a standalone.

I see hamons everywhere, some basic some real fancy. My question is first, are these all, or mostly, done for the cosmetics of the knife or for functionality?

If it is for function, then I have two more questions:
- how do you gauge the hardness difference you're going to achieve for a given thickness of clay coating?
-does the width of the hamon, i.e. the distance from the edge of the blade to the edge of the hamon line, affect the blades performance? (would it be better for instance to have a 1/2" hamon parallel to the edge or it doesn't matter and a wavy one is just as good.

Thanks guys.
