The Hat-Overlooked Outdoor Necessity

T4 and now T5, never even heard of those (and I still don't think anyone imports anything else than the T3 to here). Are they featured on any site other than Tilley's? (Tilley apparently don't think I'm a potential customer, as they won't let me use their site.)

No knife content: My trip to Japan

"All this takes only about ten seconds, and then I hang the knife vertically, with a nail through the thong hole (and that's one of the big reasons why most every LOVELESS knife has a thong tube; it makes things easy, handling the blades and knives here in the shop)."

I'm sure the Tilley's are all over the place. I don't have any links handy but an Alta Vista search will probably turn up more than a few good hits. I have one, I don't know which T it is. It's a nice hat but not really my first choice for going out on the land. I used to use the OR Seattle Sombrero with the Moonpile liner for warmth. The liner is also pretty good on the water. The Sombrero isn't that great in high wind and the ear protection is negligible. My current favorite also come from Outdoor Reasearch: the "Hat For All Seasons" It ain't too pretty, but it's very practical. Gore Tex membrane, some kind of microfleece lining, convenient earflaps, adjustible brim and the moonpile liner that is removable. I kayaked in the high Arctic in August and the hat was warm enough by itself without the liner, but, flaps up, it can be used in much warmer weather too. One other point: going without a hat in bug country is either masochism or suicide.

USCav is having a sale on woodland camo boonie hats... $5 for sizes 7 and 7 3/4. I think the standard price is $12.50 for them...

They have other colors too - but between a watch cap and a boonie cap, you should be set for most seasons!

Insert witty quip here

I found a US site for the full line of Tilley's, or at least as full a line as you unfortunate americans can get.

In case I blow the link, it's Shushans out of New Orleans: www.shushans.com/

Jhall, the fact that you've heard of Monmouth at all puts you a cut above.

I'm actually from a lot closer to your area than this. Check your email.

You don't see a lot'ta hats here in the SouthEast (Georgia). Sure.., in cold weather.., and the ubiquitous baseball cap..., but not much else.

I've got a few boonie hats (including a Gortex one) (my ex-wife used to say I shaved 50 points off my IQ whenever I put on a boonie hat

I recently picked up a wide brimmed Outdoor Research light nylon/Gortex hat that's pretty nice.

But, mostly.. we have too many trees to worry too much about sunburn, and it's just too hot and humid for hats, a lot of the time. Plus, of course..., there's the dreaded "hat head"
