Went over to visit with an old friend I have not seen in a couple years. He is a timberframer, a real pro, I brought him a little chisel I had made up over the summer. He was cleaning his shop out from a big project and I grabbed a broom and helped out. Rooting around under his bench and he asks If I could use a welder I said HECK yeah, well here you go he said I could use it til he needs it back if ever. It's an old Sears Craftsman 30-230amp AC/DC stick welder, looks like it can go up to 1/2".

I am ecstatic.

I have waited for years to get a welder.

This means I can build alot of projects I never could since I did not have my own welder.

Great score, Sam! I have a welder "on loan" at the moment, and have used it MUCH more than I originally anticipated...

Nice Sam!! I love old guys like that!:D I've gotten a few very good tools from older friends who no longer needed them and wanted them to be used and appreciated.

Great gesture on your buddy's part, enjoy it.

Next to a drill(and I've got 6 cordless, 4 corded including 2 drill presses), the welder is probably the 2nd most used tool in my shop, barely edging out the band saw. Welding became much more fun once I learned how to do it properly, little circles being the key. I can't wait to see what Sam comes up with, with modern electric welding as an option.

If you need a little training, I' found that the Arc videos, both one and two

to be a big help.
You can download them off the net, or get them at a library for free.

Along with an auto dark helmet, watching those a few times really helped.

and the Welding for Dummies book is good too, also online.

I have like 2 or 3 sketchbooks filled with stuff I have had planned waiting for me to get a welder, all to come to fruition now. Anvil stand, vice stand, hardy tools, machinery.

Sam congrats! Nothing like making your own tools and jigs and fixtures and forms and tool stands and tables and .... ;) There will be no stopping you now!

OH YES nothing like it! I have been gathering materials for years for the day I finally got my welder.

Why didn't you ask ? I have an old transformer type that still works --but it's uphill to your shop .The scooter will never make it towing it ! It's probably worth a lot just for the copper.

Robert I don't know why!? Thankfully the scooter is put away for the winter even though it's been so mild out hehe.

See Sam, "Everything comes to he who waits". ( B. Disraeli)

Sorry Stacy for the slight thread drift, but.......

All things come to he who waits, but all things come too late."

Thankfully this was not the case for Sam!

I am a bit jealous I must admit. There are a lot of things I know I could do better in my shop if I had a welder and knew how to use it. I learned oxy acetylene welding in my auto shop class back in high school. It came in handy for a few projects back then, but I haven't done any welding in over twenty years. Just another thing to put on the list.....
