the heebie jeebies hike.

It is possible that the "circle of death" you found is an old "fairy ring". (No rude comments, the term is over a hundred years old...)

Ahh, the fairy ring. A significant part of one of my favorite books of all time.

Great pictures!!

Great photos, but the only thing here that gives me the heebie jeebies is the bee.

Being allergic to them sucks big time.

Kyle.

My mother was severely allergic to bees, but I'm not. I had my share of scares over her being stung during my childhood. However I have a close friend that is who assists me with projects sometimes. He almost always has an EpiPen on him. He even leaves one here just in case he leaves his at home some day just because there are so many bees here on my land some times.

Nice hike.

Those berries are black raspberries, I know places where I can pick bushels of them here. They're delicious, although tend to be a bit seedy. The black ones are the ripe ones, the red ones are immature. You'll know when they're ripe because they pull off the plant very easy, immature ones are tougher to get off.

I've got about three acres of them that are going to eat my ESEE machete. They just keep spreading, its insane.

thanks, guys! yeah, good thing i'm not allergic to bees. i've read a few members here who are immune to poison ivy as well. i'd like to test if i am too.

Great photos! What camera do you use?

That "ring of death" reminds me of areas I find often around these parts. They are almost always in depressions like that one and in wet weather some, but not all, hold water. Can't be sure from the one picture but the berries look like black raspberries....I've only seen them once while in Illinois, they don't grow down here.

thanks! i bring my 8-yr old nikon coolpix 8700. it's a step above a point & shoot but below a dslr. i've been thinking of replacing it with a smaller point & shoot to reduce my load but somehow i always end up buying another esee

JV3, where were these taken? Some of this looks MIGHTY familiar.

harriman state park, just across the border into ny. the park is huge. it's better than the nj parks because of the tons of elevation changes.

thanks. i was wondering about the red & black coloration actually. i have plenty of time to pick some then since a lot of them were still red or in the bud stage.

just dig some up replant they spred like wildfire tho, then cut the old dead growth every year and leave the new runners, those are great for making jellies n jams if you have enough

Look for fresh chutes coming up out of the soil near the big main tangle of the berry vines. Dig up as much of the root system as you can and re-plant that. Watch out for the thorns though.

They grow and spread fast, and tangle around anything near them to grow higher, so beware of where you plant this monster!

thanks, guys. definitely no replanting for me then! i thought they'd be easy to maintain, like tomatoes & such.

Nice pics.
Point of attention when planting the bushes;
They do spread like hell and if your not carefull it gets everywhere, having that siad it might be fun to plant a few small ones in the garden your mother in law :p

If you put them somewhere you can mow around with a lawn mower you shouldn't have any trouble with them spreading.

haha. i try to write a story so someday when i'm too old to remember what the heck i did, i can just read my own story. this was in harriman state park in ny near west point.

HA...I knew it! I love going up to Harriman, you do always find peculiar things out there. Nice Pics!

forget the machete, i think my 1911 or ar-15 would be a better hiking companion. i picked it up to check the caliber but made sure to wipe my prints off of it. the caliber is too weak for deer or bear i think. not sure if this hunter was hunting another two-legged creature

Looks like a 5.45x39mm, do you remember what caliber it was?

Great pics and descriptions by the way, I like your commentary very much!

those stone pics peaked my interest more so than the blackberries and the circle of death. lol... good pics and narration. did you ask anyone about the stones? just curious

i'll keep that in mind when i get in the mood to dig my own grave :D

no need for a lawn mower, i have the lite machete  although the neighbors will get freaked out by it.

hey JV, where is that? Looks familiar.

RAT Pack # 177

tom, this was in harriman state park just across the border into ny. i also frequent high point state park in nj although lately only for fishing/kayaking.

Looks like a fun place to hike about. Dont get probed! reptilians liveeeeeeee :D

thanks! it was a .270 winchester. just checked my reloading manual and it shows 100+ grain bullet with 2,900+ fps. definitely strong enough for deer...at least that's what it was used for i hope :o

there weren't anyone around to ask. if you like those stone pics then you'll like this one from a previous hike...i call it the sacrificial chamber.
