the heebie jeebies hike.

Nothing mysterious.
Look into the history of the area.
All of the trees are skinny and young.
Second growth forest.
Not to long ago the Hudson Valley and surrounding area was farmland...
That's why you'll find rock walls in the woods.
The angle cut flat rock could have been a quarry at one time.

Your photos are quite good.
You have a knack or "eye"

Incredible!

I'm in N.Idaho very near the Montana border. It's difficult for me to imagine what N.J. state looks like.

Really, I thought it was pretty much all city back there, and no forests. Your pictures give me an more realistic view of what the landscape actually is like (forests/boulders) and allows an more accurate "minds eye" view of what this part of the country is like.

Thanks for sharing.

I have seen bare areas like that where a salt lick has been and the cattle and deer have licked a depression into the ground and nothing grows there for a while.

Excellent narrative...had me laughing! Great pictures and it looks like you had a great time.

Ive found circular rings devoid of vegetation like your picture in Ct a number of times. After researching and a little digging I found that they are the remains of small time charcoal production for iron smelters in this (NW CT) area. The local farmer did this in their off season to supplement their income. The wood was cut, split, and stacked in a beehive type structure that was then totally covered with dirt with a few draft holes at the bottom and one at the top which were adjusted to maintain a smoldering but not flaming fire. The residual charcoal has changed the PH of the soil is why it resists re-growing. If you dig in that circle and find small pieces of charcoal thats it. I found five of these circles in one day. One reason that Ct. was 80% de-forested at the turn of the century:D--KV

thanks for the compliments!

By the way, all segmented berries are edible.

thanks, tony. i'll snack on a few the next time i go back there.

closer to manhattan and up north it's mostly cities but the west side of nj is filled with state parks actually. lots of small, pristine lakes to go fishing and kayaking too!

Could that circle have been a vernal pool that just dried up?

my thought exactly

i'm going to go do some digging and maybe replanting in that area next time i'm there. if i don't return please contact scully & mulder :D
