The Himalayan Imports Khukuri Ring. Pix.

The pix is in Nepal and the Sunars will soon be looking and thinking about the project. I have to send a size model so there will be no mistakes. This will probably take a month or two to get done.

Everybody is covered.

Khukuri FAQ

I think you should send them a ring mandrel. I got mine from Greiger's ... let's see if they have a website ... no, but their address is:

Greigers, Inc. Lapidary Supplies
2830 E. Foothill Blvd.
Pasadena, CA 91107
626/795-9775
626/577-4751 (Fax)

Send for their catalog and buy a tapered ring mandrel (not a stepped mandrel; that has a different purpose). It's a tapered hardened steel rod with the ring sizes marked on it ... it's a tool as well as a measuring device; you can enlarge a ring with it ... usually you make a ring a little undersize and then enlarge it on the mandrel; that makes it come out perfectly round. It serves to hold the ring while you work on it, too -- put the ring on the mandrel and clamp the mandrel in a vise. I think mine cost about $15 but the price has probably gone up a little; it's been a while....

I'm sure they already have a mandrel but if you buy one from Greiger's (or any American supplier) it'll have the American sizes marked on it.

Come to think of it, Greiger's also sells ring sizers -- similar but made of plastic. You can't use that as a tool but you can check the size of a ring with it. They're cheaper and don't weigh as much so it would cost less to ship to Nepal. If you want to save a little money....

Actually you could save time by just calling them on voice phone without sending for their catalog first -- the people who answer the phone there are pretty good; if you just tell them you want a tapered ring mandrel with ring sizes marked on it I'm sure they can take your order right away.
