The Hinderer XM-18

Bearcut , thanks for an honest , well put review of a knife I will pine over ( the flipper version ) probably forever since not only it is financially out of my reach at the time but pretty darn hard to get a hold of unless one is willing to pay way above cost. ( which I am not )

The idea I had the other night is to wait a few years until two or three latest and greatest makers knives come along , then the XM-18 will be easier and cheaper to obtain.... hopefully :)

Bearcut,

thanks for the review.
I received my first XM18 last week, and it rides in my pocket every day.
simply put, it's the closest thing to a perfect (hard use - whatever it means) folder as it is.
It's lighter than one would think, great ergos, and the spanto blade slices well.
It gives me satisfaction just to flip it out, and fondle a bit now and then.

Hi bearcut -

Now that is how you do a review!

thanks for taking time to post your thoughts.

Great review, I was wondering about the big three you mentioned. I think you solved that for me. Thanks,

I bought an XM-18 from Les Robertson close to 3 years ago. 3.5" Duratech 20CV blade. never understood the Gen 1-3 bit, so i don't know which mine was.
i carried and used it, mostly to cut away woody brush, like finger thickness and bigger. the geometry made the blade bind at about 1/2" depth and in my hand it was extremely uncomfortable (painful even) when applying pressure to try and get the blade to cut any deeper than this. never had much discomfort with any other knife. my hands are a bit on the smaller side but far from "lily white".
concluded that 'bush craft' type cutting is not the intended type of use, but is a lot of what i need a tough knife for, so sold it and came out ahead.
kind of odd because i've not ever seen anyone else post a similar experience.

I guess a left handed xm-18 would have to be special ordered? I've not seen any around for sale veruses the right hand models, which i see for sale quite often. Thanks,

I'd offer to take that SNG off your hands but I think my wife would fly over here and kill me with it. Just dropped $500 on Busse and I am still trying to smooth things over. PM me next month if you want to move it.
