The horror of waiting.............

After my doc told me to lose about 30 lbs when I was 19, while he was eating three big macs, two large fries and the biggest milkshake I've ever seen, with half empty potato chip bags littering his desk, heaving and panting because of his 400 lb plus frame, watching me take in the "view" and telling me I had to stay alive to pay his bills, I've tended to not heed doctors as well as I should. If you have a good insurance plan, no reason not to get a second opinion or get a new primary care doctor. The fact that he scared her, I would be pissed too, but that's in the past, you have to take a lot into consideration now, more than his carelessness. Good luck to her.

KV,

I asked my wife about thyroid problems, and her advice is this:

Be very sure that the surgery is absolutely necessary before having it done.

Also, no matter what you have to do, or how far you have to travel (NYC and Boston in easy range for you), if she has the surgery done, have it done by a surgeon who does a lot of that kind of work. Not to scare you, but a former co-worker of hers had a benign tumor removed, and the job got botched. She nows takes dozens of meds per day to regulate a number of things.

If it can be controlled with meds, that would be a home run.

I'll keep you both in my prayers, and if there is anything I can do or find out for you, please email.

Geraldo

Edited to add: On a lighter note, a doctor friend of mine used to say, you have already passed the most important medical test-the wallet biopsy.

I'm gpoing to wait until the biopsy before I speculate on how things should be handle. It maybe nothing at all. Just the fact that the doctor scared her the first time around really has her freaked out about what she may or may not have.

Women are tougher and stronger than we men give them credit for.
You wouldn't make it through the pain of child birth alive.

Just stay strong for her. Be glad it's not a brain tumor, but even that isn't a death sentence. My father lived through two of them.

Don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion if you don't like your doctors options.

I'll be keeping you and your wife in my thoughts.

Ken,
if you and your wife decide that you will be doing anything via a Boston hospital--we have an empty guest room. While we don't live in Boston, we are in easy commuter range. So if you go that route and need a place to stay, let me know via pm or whatever.

Good luck with it all Ken. I hope it all turns out to be a quick and easy solution. Hang in there, it's probably not as bad as you think.

Ken if ya need anything feel free to lean on your fellow Jerzeeans.

me mudder had hers operated on and me sister.

You and your Wife will be in mine and my Wife's thoughts and prayers. Hang in there KVC.

K.V. you and your wife will be in my prayers.

My sister had her thyroid removed a few years ago. As far as I know she still needs to take meds every day. She ended up gaining weight. She also goes through (or use to go through) horrible mood swings, one minute she's happy the next she would be crying or she was ready to rip someone’s head off.

As far as the doctor is concerned, I've come to the conclusion that a lot of doctors are ego maniacs that deserve to be taken out back, have their diplomas shoved up their mud hole, and then beaten with rocks until they decide to do what’s right for the patients and not what makes them look good. Sorry for the rant but I went through a lot of doctors crap when my daughter was in the hospital.

Ken...You need to bitch-slap that "doctor", and give your wife a hug.

She'll be ok...Know THAT.

Gave her a hug when she walked in the door. Still planning on smacking the tar out of Doctor Dipshit.

Drs are the last people I trust. Just remember that they can be fired like anyone else. I fired my last primary care Dr and the SOB called and kept calling until I told him that if he called one more time I was gonna sue his arse, should'a done it anyway.:grumpy:

Edit:
I get so dayumed mad when I think of Drs that I forgot too say that I will also pray that your wife will be fine Ken.
My Sis is on thyroid meds and is doing fine, never knew anyone who had too have surgery on their thyroid.

Ken-

My mom had a thyroid surgery last year by a specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. They just removed a small portion of it. If I remember right, it was an out-patient procedure. She had a follow-up the next day and was hope by that afternoon - no drugs, barely even a scar!

Doctors can be pricks, but they can do some amazing stuff. If you're looking for a second opinion you might want to consider the Mayo Clinic. I have a 15 year old cousin from Michigan who also just recently went there for a second opinion on a thyroid problem. I haven't heard what her results were yet.

Good luck to you and your wife.

There are 2 major problems with doctors today:
#1--because of the type of manged care now prevalent in the US. doctors cannot really keep track of their patients or their histories. This is especially bad in elderly patients, who see many differrent doctors, each possibly persribing drugs/treatments without having access to records of those prescibed by others.

#2--(Which, from Ken's Description, seems to be the problem here). Doctors are not automobile mechanics. Their job is NOT to treat the disease. Their job is to treat the PATIENT. A huge number of doctors seem to have forgotten this. The one who is treating Ken's wife appears not to know this little guide to appropriate medical behavior.

If you are not satisfied with your doctor--and this includes his/her "bedside manner"--- then change doctors. Although this could well be a problem if you live in Toad Suck, Arkansas, it is not a problem in NJ.

Wow- Can't believe I missed this thread
Glad to hear it's just a Thyroid thing. The "ex" had hers removed a few years ago & is taking synthroid w/ no ill effects. She's actually levelled out- was having the mood/weight swings & now she's OK.
Best of luck w/ everything- prayers, etc. Don't knock the croaker's brains out w/ the Halligan- that's hard to explain to a jury. ;)

Update

My wife went to get a whole battery of blood tests done on Saturday and we got the results back today. It came back as clean as a whistle. Low cholesterol, no anemia, nothing. This is a bit of good news as it means other than the thyroid thing she is healthy. She goes for a biopsy on Tuesday and hopefully the results will be in her favor.
