From what I've read and what I see looking at the pics, it is meant to be the elusive "all purpose survival tool". Sawing, skinning, chopping, shaving, slicing, and useful as a draw knife/plane (that straight section). TOPS knives (www.topsknives.com) makes the newest version endorsed by wilderness survival expert/tracker Tom Brown Jr. He was a consultant on the film and the inspiration for the the character L.T., played by Tommy Lee Jones. The version shown in the film (unless I'm mistaken), is one made by David R. Beck (check him out at http://www.beckknives.com/Index.html). From what I hear TOPS knives are the cat's pajamas for the price. I owned one, an Anaconda designed by Dr. Ron Hood, but had to let it go before trying it out. Needed quick cash to visit a sick relative. The fit and finish were top (forgive the pun) notch. However, I like the look of the Beck piece better. If I'm going to drop multiple 100's on one, it'll be the Beck's original. Check 'em out. There is a comparison somewhere on the web, can't locate it at the moment. Good luck. Happy hunting.
Well...after all in info I have seen.I sent Beck in a 25% ,start of production cost, of the knife. I cant wait. WELL...I'll have to. He wont be able to fill my order till April!!! Wow! Still, I am a happy camper.
It'll be worth the wait. After I got my WSK from Dave, I sat down and designed my own style of survival knife. Dave is currently building that one for me right now. I think I'll be a customer of his for a long time.
There is an manual on how to use the different funtions of the knife on Tom Brown's website, www.trackerschool.com. Scroll to the bottom.
Before you throw down the money. Are you going to carry the blade? It's heavy and for a reason. To Tom Brown, if you have a knife and a knife alone, you are camping. The tracker knife is heavy so you can build shelters, carve bow drill sets, fire wood, etc.
What are you planning to use it for? Would like to help you decide.
Get a Beck if you are going to get this style of knife. There is no comparison. I have a lot of time behind both models, the Beck is the best hands down. The TOPS is not bad, but the Beck is light years ahead in form, function, handling, balance etc.
I plan on using mine as a carry anywhere, always have in my truck or pack, kind of knife. Right know I have a khukri that is awsome too. I will have smaller blades for detail work on me or in my pack.
