Hey guys,

I've been working on creating a custom multi-tool for an engineering class and would be really interested to hear about some of your ideal multi-tool configurations. I'm trying to design a multi-tool that will be perfect for outdoor/camping/survival use. I've been having some people around campus fill out a design survey for me to give me some specific feedback and I'll post that below for anyone who is interested. I appreciate the feedback!

multi-tool design survey ^^^

thanks for the replies so far everyone, more responses would still be appreciated! the survey only takes a minute:)

The Leatherman Charge is my favorite tool, but it is too heavy for me to EDC for office use so I EDC the Juice. I like the Leatherman Skeletool and I think it would be a good EDC for someone who wasn't a big knife enthusiast because it can be clipped in your pocket to take the place of a normal EDC folder. I enjoy carrying it except that it displaces my nice folders that I want to carry. I only use the older style tools for travel when I'm going to an area with questionable knife laws because they are a tool and not a weapon.

I filled out your lil survey... I'm not much of a leatherman carrier, I carry a SOG S66, it fits my needs, I might get a leatherman, I just haven't found one that I like...

BTW I subscribed to the thread, I'm interested in what you come up with... Who knows I might pick one up :)

Thanks for the continued feedback guys, its helping a lot. I'll be sure to post the results of the survey by the end of the month and the developed prototype soon after. Hopefully I can link in some blueprints or pictures of the build process so those who are interested can have some new modding ideas for their favorite multi-tool

Survey completed. I really like the Leatherman Supertool 300 as a heavy duty MT, and the Wave as a smaller tool.

Survey completed. For me, the Leatherman Skeletool is nearly perfect - 99% of the time, the only reason I like having a multitool around is so I can have both a knife blade and a pair of pliers handy.

My dream MT would be something sized like the Leatherman Juice but made by Victorinox.

I'll fill out the survey as soon as I get a minute.

Done. My thoughts on mutlitools is that they're too big and too heavy so I don't actually carry one. Multitools also generally don't have very useful blades. I mean they're useful for small cutting chores but the steel is usually not that great and the ergonomics of them tend to make them seriously uncomfy for any prolonged use. My ideal tool would be pliers/wire cutter, saw, file, scissors and awl under about 5 ounces or so. If you have an ergonomic body then a decent blade would be nice in 154cm or something. If the body is NOT ergonomic I'd rather it didn't have a knife.

For EDC I sometimes carry a LM juice s2, but I find it a little heavy for what I get out of it. Mostly carry it for the pliers, Phillips/flathead, and sometimes the scissors. I also carry it when I go fishing.
When I go camping/hiking I carry a wave using mainly the pliers, can opener, serrated knife. But again, I find that a little heavy.

Good luck with the project, just finished the survey. I am a big fan of the wave and spirit x models by leatherman and victorinox.

Just to give everyone an idea of the basic concept I'm shooting for as of now is a lightweight multi-tool with a frame based around the Leatherman Wave's frame that would be corrosion resistant and have a grippy, high-visibility coating (I'm considering cerakote with rubberized grip inserts). The tool selection will definitely include a blade (154CM/D2/?), a saw, scissors, flint rod, file (most likely diamond for sharpening), and screwdrivers. Everything else is still being drawn up, but there will be at least 15 tools total when all is said and done

So far my leatherman Rebar is doing it for me, that combine with my Es4 or Style Cs works great when you add in a regular folder.
