The importance of a radio?

Looking at the Yeasu VX-7R looks like a great radio.

Quirt,
What is the easiest way to get your license, just buy a book and start studying? I was signal in the Army but worked mostly with satellite equipment, I still understand radio wave propagation and basics but nowhere near ready for a test. Chirs

The Sangean DT-400 is a good compact radio that easily fits into just about any pocket. It's not cheap, but it will be going long after those dollar store radios have died.

Here's a review I found...Sangean DT-400

I passed my test with the book "Now You're Talking" by AARL. Great resource with sample questions. You can also find sample tests online.

tech license is easiest... just go to qrz.com and run through the tests (most hams would [rightly] argue that one should learn the theory vs studying for the test) ... but it's a lot of fun and there are local clubs everywhere... a 10-year license is free, depending on where you take the test... and now, getting fully FCC-licensed (Amateur Extra) gives you access to many frequencies for world-wide communications... (i had fun a couple years ago chatting with an operator in Kuwait while waiting in my truck outside my local bank)

My son has a Yeasu VX8R and it covers almost everything you could want in a radio. But like Dunner said it is not for simple use. We make sure to have the owners manual close by whenever we go out. The only other down fall I know of is it uses a rechargeable battery, but that can be overcome with a small solar panel charger. Although it is a "ham radio" which you should have the amateur license to operate. A very good radio to have in an emergency. Another one radio is a Grundig Mini 300 AM/FM/Shortwave. It is a good radio when the power goes out. Runs on two AA batteries.

B Prepared as I posted earlier the Yeasu HT has a unit that snaps in place of the rechargeable battery and it holds and powers the HT with AA batteries. I also have a spare rechargable battery.
