The Impossible Question - Do You Ever Get Tired of the Search?

What marcinek said! (WOW I'm in full agreement with marcinek ). I have not needed the last 200 knives (or more) that I have purchased, but the hunt for something new, especially at a good deal, is beau coup fun (reminds me I'm still boocoo dinky dow, goldtanker will remember that, since he remembers the wonderful aromas :barf:) and the waiting and fondling is...is...downright sexual. ;)

That's where most of the gratification comes in for me, the whole process of the search, the research, and it's not just with knives it's the same for guns, for silver jewelry I love, the chase is better than the catch

I'm kinda halfway in between. The waiting once I actually place an order, something to look forward to, is a lot of fun. I know most here hate that part though.

Yeah, that is pretty cool. And then I get it, and play with it, and sharpen it, and then my Case Peanut and Vic Classic go in my pocket. :)

I've been satisfied, or at least content with my current lineup, and with the wife not liking my collections, I had not planned on purchasing a knife for some time. That changed when the Southern Grind Spider Monkey came out. Which means I'm selling my ZT 0770CF. I love carbon fibre, but hate assisted. I'm always worried if someone borrows my knife they will injure themselves trying to close with the assist. So out with the old, in with the new. I carry my Kizer Ki423 most of the time, and I am also considering my ZT 0561. My ZT's just don't get used much, except the 0801.

Actually marcinek, though I hate to admit it about as much as you will object, I find that you are not nearly as mean and abrasive as you used to be (I'm talking GD here NOT W&C ;)). People can actually ask vague questions (in GD) without fear of a marcinek sarcasm attack. W&C has apparently become a sufficient outlet for your "attack mode"; I'm happy for you :D I will now "duck and cover" just in case.

I'm going to have to force myself to carry a knife other than my Spyderco PITS. It's absolutely perfect in every conceivable way a knife could be (for me) and was a gift from my woman, so there's that component to it as well. The next knife I buy will probably be based on like wanting to try a new handle material or a novel shape or something. The practicality boxes have all been ticked.

I am done with my knife collection. My go to is a Shiro F95CF. I finished the last hobby before I got into knives, which was headphones, with what I believe to be the most I'm willing to spend concerning diminishing return was the Sennheiser HD800. I believe that the Shiro is doing the same for me. I'm on to home theater now. Good luck to you guys who are still searching.

The search is a lot of fun. It gets annoying when things sell out so fast. It turns into a waiting game more often than not for me.

I think that it just keeps getting better and better. New technology for blade steels and handle shapes/ergonomics have come a long way.

I agree 100% GCG199. Technology just keeps getting better, same with steels, same with tolerances.. And it seems to be giving makers a little more flexibility in what they dream up and can create. And a lot of times, when I do have the funds and the timing is right for me; the knife I really, really want is sold out.

And after I get burned and see my blade is all sold out, I kind of learn that you need to stay on the hunt a little more often to catch them when they're hot.. And then whole thing seems to keep perpetuating itself.

But my self perpetuating hunt is a lot fun and I do enjoy seeing all the new knives that are coming out. Never gets old..

I still find myself searching

The good feeling we get from searching for a new knife, watching the reviews, finding the best price, ordering it and waiting for it, is because it distracts us from reality. It is emotional anesthesia that makes us forget that we will never dunk on Lebron, or date Charlotte McKinney. When I'm about to pull the trigger on a Boker Urban Trapper or whatever, I'm not think about having to clean the cat box.

Its not really about the knife. Its about the escape from reality.

That's why most or many of us will never find the "perfect" knife. We aren't just buying a knife. We are buying the good vibes and the distraction. And when that wears off, which it quickly does for most of us, we start the process over. And we end up with lots of perfectly good knives that never get carried.

Some guys will buy a CRK, then sell all of their other knives, and they are pretty much done. For them, its about the knife. But those guys are the exception to the rule. Maybe they are just more emotionally balanced than the rest of us who keep looking for something we will never find.

Now, in my view there is nothing wrong with this cycle, so long as you know what's going on and can afford it. But really, you are probably never going to find the ultimate EDC knife, because this whole process is not really about the knife.

marcinek : I tried to respond to your message and appeared to just post a message to myself :o. I'm just not good at this forum stuff (OK, label me ). Anyway, you left out "recommend a bushcraft knife" and "recommend a chopper", etc. If you feel a surge of kindness (I'll never tell :p) you could message me as to how I reply to a message. WOW that sounds REALLY dumb; I think I'll duck again.

Done.

I enjoy searching, but then lose interest once I've found what I like. I've done this with pens, fountain pens, mechanical pencils, wooden pencils, flashlights, utility knives, swiss army knives, modern folders, trombones, trombone mouthpieces...

What comes next? I don't know.

I think of a search as having a definite goal, and the implication is that once you achieve that goal, you can stop.

I know better than that. I think of it as a journey of discovery. I've learned a lot about what works for me over the years, and the experiences of previous knives inform the purchase of the next. So although I don't buy many knives, I know that there is always another knife out there somewhere that I will buy.

I get tired of it every time I'm an hour+ passed my bed time, still on my phone trying to decide which Knives to narrow down in my online shopping cart(s) without going too far over my given budget.

Ha!! This! Wow, we really do all have the same sickness..lol. I still love it though, I enjoy the search because I enjoy my knives. I do like some more than others and definitely carry some more than others but I just like carrying, using, buying, waiting for, fondling, flicking my knives. I don't see a cure in the near future,I just see my tastes and desire maturing and evolving which is what keeps it interesting.

Biologically, it's a difficult question. Is this a search for a knife in reality, or is it the endorphines and dopamine released in the process of doing something addictive and enjoyable. I've gotten the same type of pleasure receptor sensation when chasing speed on motorcycles on the the highway and track days, paintball and tons of other adrenaline inducing activities as well as activities that involve compulsion and addiction.

"...now I want to try knife monogamy."

I do this now, but I still check the ads all of the time...
Neva stop...
