The incident that caused you to end lending a knife.

Blues Bender, you aren't supposed to try and catch it with the blade open. :D I cut myself pretty bad in a store once when my attention lapsed and lost control of the knife, dropping it.... I proceeded to try to catch the fixed blade with my hands so it wouldn't hit the floor. Blood....

I have left people use my knife and they came back with the tip broke or big nicks in the blade from cutting something they shouldn't. I have loaned knives and they were never returned even after I asked the next day..... I left it in your office..... yeah, right. So, there are very seldom times that I will let someone use my knife and I won't lend my knife to anyone, ever again. Go buy your own. If you feel you need a knife, use some fore sight and buy one for yourself so you have it. The answer is always that they don't like stuff like that in their pockets. These are always the same people who want to borrow $0.50 for a coke. Borrow...., yeah, right.

Some of you guys need to get smarter friends :D.

Stupid friends might be good for a few laughs, but destroyed property, and trips to the emergency room, just aren't worth it. :D

I have a simple rule when it comes to loaning things to people- I won't loan anything unless I'm willing to accept it getting destroyed. Therefore, I don't loan things.

Of course if I know for certain that someone can ABSOLUTELY be trusted to use my belongings with the same level of care and responsibility that I do, then I might make an exception.

I wouldn't call anyone in my post "friend." ;)

This actually happened a few days ago. I was out to the beach with my friends and their friends, and there was some logs that had drifted ashore in different size. Well there was this one guy that i had known for sometime that i really don't like, he knows alot about tree and he says he wanna cut some open to see if there's the type he's looking for which could be retail for quite a price. At first i didn't lend him my knife, since he's got a bad attitude most of the time, but i kind of feel bad since he's mom left him since he was a kid, and all of my other friends was like "come on just lend him the damn knife don't be so greedy mate". So i pulled out out my rat-1 (i know it's a cheap knife but a. That knife had been with me for alot of time and there is this bond between me and the knife b. i live in Asia so the knife cost me about 55USD) after about 5 minute a heard a large clink sound and realize he had chipped a portion of the blade because he hit a rock with the knife, but it's fixable though. You think that's all? nope! After about two minutes he fell, and guess what? He used my knife to break the fall! Now my Rat-1 has a chipped blade, bent liner lock, and totally destroyed nylon handle. I'm totally heart broken

At that point, I would have taken the knife back and thrown it out into the water. Don't be so greedy, huh? Nice of them to be generous with your property.

I would not have thrown it, but thinking back i should have punch that asshole, he was still smiling when he returned the damaged knife

Just back from the big gun show, showing off my brand spanking new Razor! sharp Microtech Socom Delta. A friend of a friend does an inertia snap, but he doesn't hold on firmly enough. My blade hits his boot, he kicks, it goes flying. No damage to my new knife, but 10 min later he excuses himself, as "my boot is filling with blood"..
The "last" time..

I had a friend in high school.
I consider myself a redneck, so I can say that I thought he was too.
So I asked him:
"Where's your pocketknife?"
"I broke it."
"Well I have mine!!" And I handed him my Native 5 to look at. We were just standing around at a party. Away from the crowd of people to have a cigar.
"Feels pretty nice....HI-YA!" He yelled as he jammed it towards my...um..."masculine parts".

He stopped right before they reached them and just laughed.

My idiot cousin claimed he could stick a knife in a tree 20yds away, grabbed mine without asking and threw..and very sh!tty throw at that. PlunK. Misses the tree and then some, goes plunking, splashing into the lake. -_- "Oops..I missed." he says. "Go get it.." i growled. He didnt want to get wet...aw. -_- too bad.. I picked his dumb a $$ up and tossed his sorry self in. 50+ dollar knife, MY knife, and he takes and throws it...I would never treat anyone that way. My kabar mule went in for a brisk dive..he eventually found it, by the lanyard.

I don't lend knives, guns, cameras, automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, bows, fishing gear, tillers, tools.....oh I DID lend some tools once..the guy sold them. I had to track him down and wear my cattle prod out on him.

Me and some buddies were doing some fund raising- charitable- work, opening boxes and re packageing gift bags, I was using my inexpensive- but good quality- assist open EDC, buddy ask to use to open some blister packs, I told him it was REAL sharp, he went to do the assist open and sliced his finger DEEP, real deep, blood everywhere. Sharp has a different meaning to some I guess. As said on a previous post " some people just don't know how to use a knife". rasp21.

One of the fellas in my platoon came up to me and asked me if he could use my knife, I handed him a spyderco worker stainless. As he was walking away I asked him what he was going to use it for " I locked myself out of the barracks and gonna use it to jimmy the lock on the door" I retrieved the knife back before the event happened. That was over 20 years ago and I've got burnt once or twice since then. I am very weary to hand over knives now. Good day

At the each, I loaned out my pocket knife. It was used to pry limpets off the rocks. Broken tip. oh, well, live and learn:D

I cant single out a particular specific incident. I just learned caution early on by simply observing sheeple habits.

I never understood the concept of carrying a "loaner." Why would i go out of my way to carry an extra piece of crap to loan to someone too stupid to have their own and use it without destroying it?

Not my responsibility. And it kinda cheapens the whole concept of carrying a nice knife in the first place.

I don't ever loan or let another person use my knife.
If you need a knife and don't carry one...shame on you...your problem not mine...

My policy is constantly reinforced reading threads such as this one...
Thank you...

I'll happily loan my knife, if they loan me the replacement cost until its back in my hands. That seems to solve most problems.

Ooo I know what you mean, I used to know jerks like that and they get me fired up. My cocky response used to be you break it, you pay for it (wasn't really going to lend it anyway). Sometimes they would respond with a get outta here, give it here! I would say with authority if you damage it, I am gonna fvck your ass up. Blank stare.. forget it :)

Fortunately I dont waste my time with people like that. I've lent my folder to family for a quick cut - box, food etc. and already happened twice where they cut their hand or finger. Some are scared of the sharpness of a factory edge Spyderco. Now I just ask what they need and help them. I only lend to people who I know are careful or use tools, scared of stories like in this thread where they hurt themselves.

What is even scarier than letting people hold one of your knives is a sword. With guns you can ensure that the weapon is unloaded before letting someone take a look at it. That way even if they are a complete doofus they won't hurt themselves or others. With a knife, a person can truly hurt themself but it probably won't be life threatening. A sword on the other hand, like a real sword or an antique is so dangerous I am very choosy about who I let touch one.

While hunting with my (now ex) brother in law, we drug his deer out to the side of a dirt road. We were able to clean the deer in the headlights that way since it was pretty dark by the time we found the deer. He started to gut the deer and told me his knife was too dull.... I'm not sure why anyone would go hunting with a dull hunting knife but he asked if he could use mine. I had a nice fresh edge on my Cold Steel Master Hunter so I handed it to him. He started cleaning the deer until he reached a point that he needed two hands. Instead of carefully laying my knife down the idiot stuck it point first into the dirt road. It took quite a while to get all of those nicks out of the edge and I never loaned him another knife.

I now always ask 'what do you want to cut?' I once had this backfire when a buddy asked to use my knife to cut open sandbags - yeah the hessian would dull it a bit, but ok I thought. Went over 30 min later and he's stabbing the knife into the full sandbags and then emptying them, instead of just cutting the tops off. I now very rarely lend a knife to someone who doesn't usually have their own. It breaks me when I see people using knives as scrapers, screwdrivers, tin openers etc. Especially when it's a decent knife (or was, before they abused it).
